A bit of heads up. My F30 330D MSport was stolen off the drive 8 days ago, I'm being asked to give the details of the theft and all the information on the car and its service history to the insurer online via my iphone (the insurer text me) which is great for uploading images, but a pain for everything else.

Whilst I have every invoice for the servicing of the car (it's a '63 plate with 147,000 miles on it) along with all the invoices for any service repairs, tyre replacement etc etc, the insurers online portal doesn't provide sufficient space to upload what amounts to over 50 A4 pages.

Thinking the easiest way to provide the information would be to contact BMW Customer Services and ask them to provide me with a scan or PDF of the summary of the service information, primarily the date of the service, the mileage and the dealer.

I informed them I needed this information because the car had been stolen and my insurer was requesting proof of the vehicle's service history.

Having had the conversation above, the gentleman from BMW customer services informed me he'd need to speak to his supervisor to establish the best way to do this.

He returned a couple of minutes later and asked if I had informed the Police of the theft, to which I replied that I had.

His response was that in that case, they weren't able to divulge any information on the car, except to to Police directly.

So be warned, either ensure you keep every service invoice and its supporting paperwork, and /or take a photo of the service history from the car's iDrive screen after every service, but what ever you do, don't tell BMW customer services that the car has been stolen, or more pertinently, that you've notified the police of the theft.

Oh and furthermore, I spoke to my insurance broker today also. I was looking to get a quote for a 1 or 2 Series to replace the 330D.

He informed me that the levels of car thefts he's seeing now, far exceeds the previous high in 2010, and that Range Rovers are getting increasingly awkward to insure, to the point whereby two of the companies they use to insure vehicles, refuse to cover a Range Rover whose value exceeds £15K. Then came the chilling words I didn't want to hear : BMW 1,2 and 3 Series are being heavily targeted by the thieves currently. They're being stolen to order and exported (to Africa apparently)

You've been warned ...

It seems a strange reaction that they wouldn't divulge any service information about your car because you had reported the theft to the police. I don't understand that???

I follow the Stolen Cars Midlands page on Facebook, pretty much every single day there is a Land Rover / Range Rover product lifted from the streets of Birmingham / West Midlands area. Bear in mind that there will be many more nicked each day that don't make it on to that Facebook page.
