Quick question re batteries...

I've always gone for a 019 sized standard 'flooded battery (Yuasa, Exide, Bosch etc)

Is it worth at all looking at the same spec AGM battery (c£50 more and a bit lighter in weight etc)

The E39s don't have anything like IBS etc; so it's just plug n play electrics

Did they ever have AGM batteries from factory?

I wouldn't bother (esp if it costs £50 extra...but I'm a tight git).

Nah; too old for AGM. Always the standard flooded type battery

Haha I don't want to fork out more than necessary; but I know the AGM batteries tend to be a lot more reliable...

But £120 vs £170...! wink

I've found decent brand batteries last well, especially if the car is used regularly and battery not left to run low.

Cost of living crisis - non AGM for me wink

Yup... Never had any issues before and if I know the cars not going to be used for a while, it'll go onto trickle charge anyways...

The E39 isn't as delicate when it comes to sitting for periods unused, unlike the F01 I had. That always kicked up a fuss and a reason why I sold it as it wasn't being used!

I wouldn't bother Dan, as you say, the E39 takes infrequent use well.
I'd just go with a high-quality SLA item say via Tayna.

( i really must do this myself one of these years - think the one in mine is 11 years old! )

I've found BMW to be very competitive on batteries and a few dealers will price match Halfords etc. I think they still use Varta who are probably the best.

Hmm. My E39 540 was a third car and you could almost hear it consuming electric. It was out with the charger every time if I didn't fire it up once a week and take it for a spin.

Granted, that was an incentive to use it, but I also had a 350Z at the time and some weekends I could not be arsed.

I have a 645 now, with every intention of using it weekly.

I can tell you now BMW aren't going to better any price for batteries over the likes of Tanya etc...

And what for? Why would anyone need a specific BMW battery unless it's under warranty...

I bought a BMW battery 16 years ago and it still works. But there are cheaper inferior options of course and it depends on how long you are keeping the car for.

Aye; because BMW batteries are much better than Bosch or Exide (OEM) etc... rolleyes

Each to their own, but I won't be pissing my money up a wall forking out for a standard battery that has BMW written on it! rolleyes

Aaah, what a sweet charmer you are Daniel.

But it's nice that you're allowed to express an opinion.

BMW batteries are made by Varta btw.

Oh hang on...........

I am and yes, I do biggrin

And Exide are OEM also; BMW use numerous companies for their batteries; like all their other parts smile

Lads, this seems like a charged situation. Let's forget the negatives and focus on the positives.

B'dum Tisch... You 'ere all night? biggrin

Only commented as it seems that if I don't buy a BMW battery then I'm not doing the right thing or spending the correct amount of money...

We all have our preferences; but how many times does it need to be repeated that I wouldn't be spending BMW money on such a simple item
