Hi,

I noticed a few weeks ago my AC in my 2013 320d wasn't blowing cold. Took it to BMW as I have extended warranty and they did a leak test, said there was no leak and just needed a regas. Apparently it had around 150g out of 600g gas left.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and it doesn't seem to be that cold. My question is - how cold does your AC get in temperatures such as those today (30 degrees)?

I'm going to book it in again but not sure if I just have high expectations.

Edit: I put it on max AC and even after 5-10 mins of driving it still felt cold, not freezing.

Based on my experience, I'd put £100 on the problem being a leaking condenser!

Having had issues in recent years with different cars in the household, agee on above, condenser has a hole in it. It needs leak testing with dye,

Today's temperature should not be an issue, mine generally pulls down to 19c in a matter of minutes.

Bit of an update. AC worked fine for a bit after the regas then started blowing warm. Took it in again, this time they said it's a faulty sensor and replaced it. Again, worked fine for a week or so then after driving at the weekend it feels even worse, passenger side blowing hot and drivers barely cold after 30 mins of driving!

I'm getting very frustrated now as my car has been with them for over 2.5 days in total and still not fixed. I have the BMW comprehensive warranty and have only had to pay the £100 excess so far (same cost as a regas).

Phoned them this morning and taking it in tomorrow. Would you be tempted to put in a complaint? If it is a hole in the condenser, it's unlikely to be covered by the warranty, however I feel at this point they should fix at no additonal cost due to the hassle!

They did a leak test the first time it went in which came back fine.

At a bit of a loss!

My wife's Civic's AC stopped working a few years ago, garage did a leak test and said it was fine so re-filled with gas. Two weeks later it stopped working again, turned out to be the condenser.

Maybe try an AC specialist, it's certainly got a leak - that is typical when BMW's run low on gas, it priorities one side or you may also notice it sounds like the fans are blowing at 100% but then there's little to no air coming out of the vents.

I suspect they haven't ran a proper leak so suggestion would be to find another specialist and you can always go back to BMW for the bill afterwards.

So it went in for the third time last week, they couldn't find any issues so did a software update on the car!

Drove it after and lo and behold, it started blowing warm after 20 mins of driving.

They're having it for two days next week and giving me a loan car. There must be a leak but sounds like they are too process driven to work it out - computer says there's no leak so there mustn't be.

Thankfully I've only paid the £100 warranty excess so far so they can keep it as long as they like until it's fixed.

FFS, that’s a desperate attempt at fixing it!

Have they not put any dye in the system to see where the leak is coming from?

Just because the system works for a bit & then stops there isn't necessarily a leak.

OP, did they actually have to regas after the first time?

If not there isn't necessarily a leak that is causing the issue.

Did they check that they had put the right amount in?

Have they checked the drier?

Gas doesn't just leak out. It will have a tiny, tiny hole. F series cars onwards, the condensers are thinner. In the last couple of years, we've had to replace the original one on an 12 year old 'E' car, one on a 2 year old 'G' car plus a 8 month old VW.

Phone call this evening and voicemail left, "sorry sir the air con machine is broken so we may have to book you in again"

It was broken the last time they had it in - surely they knew this before booking me in again!

I'm going to phone and put in a complaint tomorrow. It will be the fifth time going in! Plus with the heatwave this week I am not going to be without a/c, especially as I've been paying £65 a month for the warranty for the past 3 years and not had a single claim yet.

Update.

They kept the car in (whilst I had a brand new X2 loan car) and have replaced the condenser plus some pipes as they think there was a hairline crack.

I emailed a complaint due to all the hassle and the service manager called me apologising and offered a goodwill gesture sum of money.

Overall a good outcome. Just need to test the AC properly on a longer drive.
