Hi all,

After some advice and sanity checking!

I’ve got a 2017 F22 M240i which I thought needed a ‘major’ service so booked in at a local German specialist to save £200 knowing they could update the idrive / key etc.

Turns out it only needed a ‘minor’ service I.e. oil and filter change - great news!

Got a call in the afternoon, assuming it was ready to collect but instead was told the filter had broken in the housing and with no way to extract, the only option is a new filter housing.
With a total bill at £1000 (!!). This is ~£500 in parts the rest in labour as it’s about 6hrs apparently.

I tried to ask for some goodwill etc. but got nowhere so as it was undrive-able told them to crack on. Now I’ve found that the internet is full of stories of this happening on the B58, the garage says they’re fitting a revised housing which addresses the known issue.

Would anyone have done anything different here? I’m kicking myself I didn’t take it to BMW as it had fsh with them so perhaps would have had some goodwill but maybe I’d be in a worse situation with their costs?. If I’d known it was a minor I would have! I can only imagine they’ll tell me to go away now I’ve taken it elsewhere. Thanks

Yes it’s well known but mine has had three changes without a problem. Last change was an indie who knew of the issue and said they had given it plenty of lubricant before removing.
I’ve never heard anyone being charged that much for it though, most garages seem to just need to keep it in a bit longer. I’d question what the £1000 is for.

If you haven’t already I’d recommend reducing the oil change interval to 1yr/10k mileage intervals. It gives the filter a bit more chance of survival.

Should have taken it to BMW main dealer, I would imagine they would have sorted it out of good will if it’s FSH and service was within the schedule

This times lots.

I changed the oil in my 335i yesterday after 9k and was surprised at how black it was. I’m going to stick with doing it at the halfway point from now on.

It's a design fault as many failed when getting their first service over on babybmw, the part was on back order at one point it was that bad.

This is what I’m annoyed about now!

Has anyone else experienced something similar and know if bmw would have covered / contributed? Should I approach them now or just move on?

Quote is about £500 in parts and 5.5 hours labour.

Thanks all

Sounds as though you are being ripped off for both parts and labour. The housing is around £200- get a breakdown of parts

Same thing happened to a friend of mine, his was in for a service with BMW though, they replaced it free of charge…..he had a new M3 as a courtesy car for a week as well as they had to wait for the part

This. Happened to my 340i before I bought it, but it came with a shedload of receipts - filter housing being one of them. Bill was just shy of £500. Job was done by a specialist, so no BMW goodwill involved.

These are being done FOC by any Main Dealer as a design fault. The housing and filter have now been modified.

All your garage needed to do was call a dealer and they will recover the car and repair FOC.

Bmw take this cost on the chin when doing services.

However if it’s done elsewhere then no chance

I (very nervously) did the filter on my 2017 M140i a couple of weeks back. It came out ok.

I did a bit of research beforehand & the only workaound I found was to stick a self-tapping screw into the part of the filter that was left behind in the bottom of the housing & then grab hold of it with some pliers & pull. Sounded a bit sketcy but has worked apparently.

I'm sure I read the filter has been revised in 2019 possibly?? I could have dreamt that though, it was on my mind a lot leading up to doing mine!

Hmmm. What is it with BMW 'Bxx' engines and oil filter housings??

The 30i versions of the B48 have a different problem, in that the oil filter housing cracks, and dumps coolant. It seems that BMW think that oil / water heat exchangers should be made of plastic. Article here:

As you say there is a cheap workaround should disaster happen (feel for the OP) and the later filters have been revised. Its something I would treat with kid gloves mind.

Havent encountered it myself on my 240i but I became aware of this potential issue around the time I bought the car and as a result always take it to the main dealer for oil services, they charged me £240 last time just for an oil and filter change which I thought was excessive but I do it on the basis I hope to get some goodwill from BMW should the same happen.

Thanks all for the replies.

It’s ended up with replacing the housing and will be certain to keep more regular changes from now on! Although will feel like a lottery each time it’s done.
Apparently the part has been updated twice (though I can only find reference to 1 oil filter housing part number).

For anyone’s future reference, I’ve seen quotes of £5-600 talked about online but I think in reality it’s a £1k ish job at most reputable garages as it’s 6-7 hrs labour. BMW quote about £1500.

A costly lesson learned - good job the car is absolutely lovely otherwise!

Glad it’s sorted. Checking realoem there seems to be only 1 oil filter and housing for your car with no revisions. These paper oil filters collapsing isn’t a new issue. It’s been happening since they were introduced on BMWs in the 90s.
