BMW Extended Warranty
Discussion
I’ve been buying new and changing at 3 years for a long time now. My current G20 340ixDrive will be 3 years old next March but due to lockdowns etc., I’ve only done 16,000 miles so think I might hang onto it for another year.
I hear a lot of bad publicity about warranty companies so thinking of extending the official BMW one. Any ideas of the cost involved?
I tried to enquire online but the page is asking me for a code from the ‘letter they sent’.

The letter is normally sent a month or so before the 3 year anniversary. You could do a simulation with a car that is just over 3 years but that will be more expensive as the warranty has been interrupted (to the tune of around 40% but you could still extrapolate from there). As you say no good if still in warranty but just pick same car on autotrader that is just over 3 years old and calculator will give you a premium(annual or monthly) with option of excess and recovery option. The price is based on the model so fact that its not your reg doesn't matter. Premiums increases when car reaches 60k miles but works in different ways when reach this mileage.
If an annual premium this will increase substantially but if paying monthly premium will increase at end insurance year but is generally only a small increase of a few £ per month. Choose and older cars same model and put mileage in at say 59k then 61k miles will show you the difference.
If you're going to take it out make the phone call before existing warranty ends and cover will be continuous. For a new policy without any existing cover you will not be able to claim for first month. No checks on car but if it goes in for a claim any fault which could be proved to be existing will not be covered.-this obviously does not apply if cover is continuous.

^ price is substantially lower when the cover is bought while still under (official) warranty. Something like 40% cheaper.
I have renewed mine after the three years (twice now), thus maintaining continuity. I claimed for a rear diff leak (gasket). It was done, under warranty, even though I did read that gaskets were excluded. I just renewed on line.Pica-Pica said:

Yes me too. I have renewed twice and will carry on. It is a brilliant product for my needs and cheap peace of mind.
Agreed. It is as near to a new car warranty as you will find. No quibbles about any work needing doing in my experience. X5 50i - about £16k worth of warrant work... Never questioned...
rear air suspension springs
air suspension compressor
transfer box
driveshafts
front control arms
high pressure fuel pumps
injectors
turbo coolant pipes
vacuum pipes
heater valves
all this was between 40k and 62k mileage wise. currently on 70k and have no intention of changing it. it's practically new
£1250 a year with £250 excess I think (pay monthly to avoid the doubling of costs once over 60k)

I think in total I claimed 4 times - sometimes the fault would manifest itself - as in the hp fuel pumps, sometimes it was caught by their technicians - the leaking transfer box, and then the MOT highlighted worn bushes in the lower suspension arms...BMW parts prices/labour rates are so ridiculous that even with a £250 excess you are still well in the money on pretty much any claim... For example, each high pressure pump is close to £900 and then add 2hrs of labour at £200 and your yearly excess is "paid" for... Even something as simple as a heater valve is about £300, add about 1hr of labour and boom, you are in the money...
Also had an excellent experience of having a warranty on my old 335i which felt like it was in the garage practically every 3 months.
I think in the end it would have been around 15-20K worth of work, over the 8 years I had it, but also the fact that the dealer sorts out all of the admin is also great.
I found £100 to be the sweet spot, as had a couple of issues that were just above £200 but below £250. This is a few years ago now though, I imagine there's probably not a huge amount of stuff left that would cost less than £250 to sort.

Do people run this past 5 years?
I’ve extended the warranty to year 4 and 5 but, now it’s 5 years old and over 60k, the cost has doubled.
On the one hand, I’m thinking this is when I’ll probably need it (I’ve not claimed yet in the two years I’ve extended)
On the other, I’m thinking that I’ll take it to an Indy for repairs now and it’s being sold early next year for something new coming….

I assume you've been buying it annually then?I’ve extended the warranty to year 4 and 5 but, now it’s 5 years old and over 60k, the cost has doubled.

You can pay monthly and as long as you don't have a break in cover, you can continue it at the same price until 100k miles I believe.
Yes, the monthly option is slightly more expensive...but still works out much cheaper than the annual rises.
I did it on mine from 2 years old and 16k miles, all the way to 6 years old and 100k miles...and in my case the £70/month £0 excess, full comp warranty paid for itself many times over (e.g. including a new engine and diff)!

l'm positive that my bmw extended warranty ran way past 100k miles. was that because it was only 4 years old?You can pay monthly and as long as you don't have a break in cover, you can continue it at the same price until 100k miles I believe.

I think I was up to 117k miles in 4 years.

It was my choice to end it at 100k, as I wanted to do some mods (suspension, brakes, engine, supercharger) and it seemed pointless to keep paying for a warranty on parts they'd most definitely not cover I think I was up to 117k miles in 4 years.

mine is currently on 163k miles and I ended the warranty by choice this year, I guessed at that miles and 15 years old they could legitimately argue that anything was wear and tear, not a failure. It was great when I needed it though, my car is now a bit Triggers Broom thanks to the warranty
