Hello, looking for some advice - I am looking to change the rear brake pads on my 2011 X5 40d MSport. I can't work out if this needs to have the electronic parking brake retracted via software before removing the caliper or if it has the old fashioned parking brake shoes inside the caliper and I can just use a G-clamp. Can anyone advise? Also any advice on what pads and wear sensor? Thanks in advance.

Don’t try a G clamp as that might damage the calliper. For the cost of replacing them just buy the OBD tool to retract the parking brake motor to service position. It’s not worth risking it with brakes really.
For the correct pads either the dealers or online retailers that use the reg number. Try realoem.com for the part numbers.

Pads must be retracted in the brake service menu through the OBD2 socket. Pads are in the caliper, no brake shoes in the disc bell and once the pistons park position is done, tou will still need to wind the pistons back with the appropriate tool.

Make sure the ignition is left on whilst replacing them so you need a well charged battery, or a charger to support the battery whilst you do the replacement.

Handbrake is inside rear discs on the E70, no need to do anything with the electronic handbrake if you are just changing pads, remember and replace the pad wear sensor.

Why would you need to leave the ignition on?
