Hi All

I visited a BMW dealer yesterday and purchased a new car, of which during the process the whole "you need GAP/Tyre/Smart insurance of which having had these previously found them to be convoluted to use (not Gap).

So when I declined the whole lot the sales person bought in the business manager who spent 20 mins trying to talk me into buying these products despite me saying no and explaining (I didn't need to explain myself) why.

The car was advertised on BMW web site car locator for a shade under £49k OTR. But when I am in the dealer I am shoved multiple papers and numbers I got quite annoyed which lost some concentration. I felt damn stressed about it and then they said the price is advertised price plus delivery, first registration bla/bla...

Question - OTR cost should include the delivery, first reg, fuel etc right? So why I am being charge about £1100 more is beyond me - I just wanted to check these costs should be included when its advertised OTR.

I have emailed them to ask for an explanation with the screenshot of the advertisement, I now remember why I don't like buying new cars face to face.
When I bought our last vehicle last year it was mainly email so it was easy to say no..

Cheers

Shocking experience. You just want to buy a car at the price it was offered at.

You have my complete sympathy and reminds me why I prefer to buy used cars privately or new cars online.

I had similar 5 years ago. That’s why I keep that buying/selling pain a once-in-ten-years issue.

I've had quite a few cars new and used from my local BMW/Mini dealer now and deal with the same sales person each time. They know not to waste time with all the GAP and other insurances now. I just say no and sign that they've been offered.
OTR should be everything, wait till you see the final invoice and charge for plates and the usual £20 of fuel, yes you'll be lucky to get a full tank. Saying that the used Mini we just got the sales woman did fill it up.

Sounds horrible. Maybe an idea is to take someone with you who is hard-nosed and objective to help you keep your head straight (if you happen to know someone like that).

I was at a BMW bike dealership yesterday test riding. I hit my 60th this week and I wanted to buy myself a present before all my savings go to British Gas.

I had made up my mind to buy the bike I was testing new, with the options I wanted.

I asked the salesman the price and he seemed to spend ages on a computer going through stuff and talking about why certain options were not needed.

I just wanted the price of the fully loaded model.

He then showed me a secondhand bike in a colour I didn't like with luggage options I didn't want for near on the price of what I wanted new.

Turns out BMW don't do the fully optioned version anymore due to not being able to get hold of components.

I left empty handed although he was really trying to push the one year old bike on me.

A little digging and other Motorrad dealers across the country have what I want, albeit secondhand.

You'd think after me asking for a certain machine, obviously willing to buy, he'd bend over backwards in trying to secure a bike from elsewhere.

Odd!

OTR means On The Road, therefore, I would expect the On The Road price to be the amount I have to pay to find myself, on the road, in the car, heading home from the dealership. If someone started wheeling out hidden costs in addition to the OTR price I'd remind them what OTR stands for, what it implies and then head for the exit.

There is no point complaining to BMW about the price. They are invested in the dealer selling for as much as possible.

It’s usual car sales bks, suspect this might be a pendragon dealer?

They do have to tell you about these finance options as in the case of gap insurance if you weren’t offered it and you had a crash you might sue.

You have to be prepared to walk out. And you have know what the price is. Otr is just that. The rest is profiteering .

Guys thanks for your feedback

The car is not pre-registered it’s brand new but in stock which is why I’m keen to drive it away and being hybrid will stave off my 2x visits to petrol stations each week.
I’ve emailed the sales person this am and explained my feelings and they were very keen to resolve the situation and they blamed the business manager (threw him under the bus).
I’m really on the verge of telling them to stuff it, and maybe buy a ev polestar which was a completely different experience but I’d have to wait and that’s not something I can do.

As some of you have said I can piss in BMW’s ear but reviews on Google are more powerful as it can put people off or at least warn them.
The big one was the autoglym seal and protect. The interior one is a complete joke as the policy says if you can’t remove a stain off the leather they will refund the policy cost! It’s a joke. I explained I can prep and seal a car myself and it’s something I can do easily, as well as ceramic polish - the business manager asked me if I was a detailer, I was slightly offended..

It’s staggering how they role out these extra’s but I believe they are told and targeted to do it, but the hard sell is discomforting- I guess a few people buckle and accept it.

When I bought my current Mini I had this over email - but I just kept saying No.. in the end the dealer added the autoglym as a cost and deducted the car price by the equal amount because he had to show he had sold something!

I feel your pain.
The last time I bought a car, I was pushed paint protection "to make sure your paint doesn't fade to a paler colour."

I couldn't help but sarcastically ask him how much paler he thought my white car might get....

(Yes, I know there's a point to paint protection on white cars but not at dealer prices, and he didn't seem to know why he was selling it to me...)

I pity the sales people who are bullied into behaving like pillocks.

A new £50k car should be a pleasant thing to buy. Not necessarily an 'event' with balloons, but you definitely deserve professionalism, and respect for your time.

And these big face to face sales organisations wonder why their industry has a bad rep.

This thread is why I couldn't work in car sales, their always pushing the extras, I think they totaled £2600 on my last BMW and just told them to take them all off.
The Autoglym is the biggest con out the lot, they charge something like £750 when you can buy the products for £10 of eBay.
You should of asked him how long thier detailers take to apply the Autoglym as a proper job would take at least a full day not the 1 hour they have the guy on work experience throw some product on a car.
The saleswoman at Mini embarrassingly showed me on a tester strip what with and without protection does when it gets wet. Told her again, no thanks.

Currently going through this also with BMW but bikes and also Triumph. Some dealers are very very good some are just too pushy. I’m a laid back guy unless I need to turn it on which isn’t very often these days but some of these salesman are just too keen to bark at you.

When I bought my last car I had the upper hand as they desperately wanted my PX. But it was a fantastic experience and I still keep in touch with the salesman as he was so good to us. The only time I saw the business manager was when he came out to shake my hand and tell me to enjoy my car.

Hope you find what you’re after. If one dealer is being crap don’t give them your money. Someone else somewhere will work with you in a way you enjoy, they should get the sale.

If the car is a new stock car, I’d be tempted to phone another dealer in the group and see what they can do. They’ll be able to have the car transported to them if they’ve got a sale which would be unfortunate for the knobbers you’re currently dealing with!

I'm just buying a new one at the moment. I didn't get any of the hard sell, they worked out pretty quickly that I wouldn't be in the market for that kind of thing.

Same for the last Mini I bought

It should be exactly the same, as it's likely to be a dealer group issue, nothing to do with the individual garage (or BMW).

I've had exactly the same from a major dealer grioup on Mercedes and Volkwagen.

The sales guys get fired if they don't sell enough add-on stuff.

Don’t get me started with BMW I purchased a 6 month old X3 2.0d M Sport when I went to collect it, it was the wrong car they had given my car to a football club’s Doctor which the were contacted to supply a new car every 6 months, the one that came was duff so they give him mine till they got the other one fixed.

They had to loan me a car for two weeks while they searched for one the same as I had purchased, in the end I found one from another of their branches which cost 2.5k more which they did let me have for the original cost. Expensive for them

That sounds bloody frustrating; the business managers or whatever they’re called are often a pain in the bum.

I tired to buy my M140i locally and went to the dealership with rough figures from TRL, if they’d matched them I’d have bought the car. Instead the business manager bloke came out with his laptop with my configuration on display spinning on the screen and running h through their figures which were way out of kilter with what I could have bought. Apparently it was going to cost them money to sell the car at this price and he was banging on like he was doing me a favour.

I left and ordered my car through Tony Lewis; no BS, no hard sell etc. They followed up a few weeks later and were frustrated that I’d ordered the car elsewhere and said they’d have matched the figures from TRL. The salesman got a bit grumpy when I pointed out that apparently it was going to cost them money to sell me a car….

As mentioned previously, OTR costs should include all delivery fees, plates, bit of fuel etc. sounds like they’re trying it on a bit.

Me too! So much simpler. 1 phone call, 2 emails. Turned up and was out of there after 10mn. He threw the keys at me and told me to fk off, perfect.

I had a similar experience to the OP but with a new in stock VW. Car was advertised at £33k on the road. I paid a deposit and they sent me an invoice which contained £2k worth of 'add ons'. However the joke was that these insurance, paint protection products etc were actually not 'add ons' at all and the actual price of the car was £31k! I declined the additional products and paid the lower price.

Does anyone know if there's a comparable amount of misery when buying an approved used BMW? I've seen one I like. If I buy it I'll be paying in full there and then. I really don't want a load of nonsense. I just want to throw them the money as they throw me the keys and then be on my way home asap.
