My M6 is currently at the main dealer awaiting an obscure dashboard component that is built to order, so the dealer has given me a 220d Coupe for the duration of the wait, which could be 4-6 weeks.

I have to say the looks 'don't grab me' but as a driving experience, it's a great car.

Without trying that hard, i've already seen an indicated 71mpg on the motorway cruising around/just under the legal limit. Even day to day driving around town, i'm seeing high 40's /low 50's mpg. They really have got great results out of diesel engines now.

It's extremely well insulated, you'd be hard pressed to hear it's a diesel most of the time. Wind noise is low, tyre roar is very good but actually the loudest noise source.

This car has adaptive suspension, even in comfort it's still firm but very well damped. Handling is great, really sharp turn in and grip, does lack in steering feel though. It's much more fun to hustle around than i expected.

Space in cabin is fine. - but don't expect anyone that tall to sit in the back for long periods. I think it has sport seats and they have been comfortable over 2 hour trips that i have done.

Cabin quality is great - solidly built and good equipment.

For a 'lower' level model BMW - it would be a great daily car. Genuinely impressed.

It has surprisingly made me think that a 240i xdrive would be a cracking car in the future. Performance in the real world is not that much difference at sane speeds - that's what 5 years technology and development has brought to the table.
Will sort a test drive soon. M6 GC is great but it's HUGE and you really risk your license if you are 'enjoying' the performance.

The previous 2 Series is one of my favourites. I had a 218d Sport loaner and I really liked it - like a modern E30. Excellent to drive and a handy size. Just when you think BMW can't really improve a car, they just seem to do it.

I had a peek around a 220d coupe in the dealer a couple of weeks ago

Lovely in Melbourne Red and M Sport trim, looked a really nice package and just a nice size

Refreshing when everything is just getting so huge and bloated now .. it was dwarfed by the iX thing parked next to it

Must admit I was impressed with it

I have the previous gen M240i as my daily and I still think its a superb place to be 2 years into ownership. Its probably all the car I need 95% of the time.

I plan to keep mine another 18 months to 2 years.and then I'll probably look to change. I'd be very tempted bu the latest 2 series but I think k I want more rear space next time to get the whole family in so a 3 series is probably more likely.
