Having had a puncture recently, I thought I'd better get the space saver in my E46 Touring refreshed. A new tyre, just in case. How difficult could that be?

As it turns out, very. Blackcircles stock the tyre but dicked me around so much with the fitting booking that I cancelled out of frustration. Called all the local fitters who said they couldn't get the tyre as it's an unusual size, and one said even if they could the valves are different on a space saver so they couldn't fit it.

I can't be the only person to want to not have a 20-year-old tyre as a backup - why is this so difficult?

Can you fit a normal sized alloy & tyre in there like you can with the E39?

I suspect not as I'm running 18s... Might do a bit of measuring but I'd be surprised if it would fit. Could get a random 17 I suppose, but it would likely be a darn sight more expensive than a £70 space saver tyre.

Could check on ebay for compatible space savers out of newer cars (if there are any)

That's a good shout. Presumably with a space saver, as long as the PCD is the same, the offset can be close rather than exact?

Yup but with the right 17" tyre; the rolling radius will be the same smile

It's only for emergencies and the peace of mind is that you'll have a proper wheel & tyre
