4 Series Gran Coupe Late N55 or early B58?
Discussion
I have a 640D GC for and Mini Cooper S for fun and am considering selling both to fund a 'compromise'. Top of the list is a 435i or 440i Gran Coupe.... I've had an E92 335i in the past and loved the N54 engine.
I've heard great things about the B58 and know people who've owned 340is..........My question relates to the N55 engine.
From the research I've done it appears that during it's life the N55 changed from an Pneumatic wastegate to an electronic wastegate.......this happened for the 2014 model year apparently. Later N55's also had a slightly larger 4" inlet pipe and also received a slightly larger turbo compressor too.
BMW's specs for both engines remained the same but the later stock cars allegedly make a solid 15hp more on the dyno. After a map the later electronic wastegate cars make 25-30 more apparently.
My question to the Pistonheads BMW engine experts is can you confirm whether the above is accurate because I've seen conflicting information. A couple of remap sites, that are very well thought of on the BMW forums, that don't mention the difference between early and late spec engines at all whilst other sites suggest the difference is night and day.
Thanks in adavance for any assistance.....

FWIW when the original M235i was launched, it had the 15bhp or so increase compared to the M135i & that was put down to the new wastegate. So I would only assume this would have been the reason for the same power increase if quoted on the 3/435i too. Either way, on a 1500kg+ car with over 300bhp, you're really not going to notice that much of a difference in power. And chances are you're probably going to need to change the turbo at some point too if you intend on keeping the car, or if it hasn't already been done. My N55 turbo had to be replaced on 25k! The N55 has quite a few well known niggles

B58 is a fantastic engine. I've had it in a few different cars. My mate has an X3 40i after recently coming out of a N55 335i convertible. He loves the thing.

i was going to say this. The older engine has a few known issues whereas the B58 seems to be very well regarded and has fewer issues.https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/12/12/bmw-n55-engine-...

The B58 ha much greater headroom for tuning so a better longer term prospect. I ran a m135i with N55 a nd now havr a 440i GC.
The m135i sounded better when you are revving it out and has more sparkle at the top end. But the b58 has much better and more meaty mod range torque so easier on A roads for overtaking.
Fundamentally both great engines but I'd go B58

Apologies for not responding sooner............thank you for everyone who has replied.
So........B58 then. Strangely there's remarkably little difference in the price for late N55 35i cars and early B58 40i machines with similar spec and mileage.......does anyone know why that is bearing in mind the B58 produces more power and produces less less CO2..
