Picked up a 2 series active tourer with the petrol 1.5 engine a couple of days ago. My Mrs was driving it yesterday a message appears on the dash, showing this

Then a few minutes later, this

I topped the oil up with around quarter of a litre this morning and drove round the block before testing the oil level. There's no dipstick on these so it's done through the idrive with the engine running. First measurement showed 3/4 full then the next 2 measurements showed half full.
Has anyone had a similar issue or are there any inherent issues with these engines?

Let me get this straight, the car says "top up with 1 litre" you put in 1/4 litre and are wondering why there is an oil level issue.

Very helpful. I only had quarter of a litre in my garage. The question is more to do with whether there are known issues with oil consumption and the accuracy of the oil gauge, ie. Why it showed 3/4 full on the 1st measurement and 10 minutes later half full

When was the oil last changed? If it was 10k miles ago, then it’s not unusual for it to be 1L down. If it was recent, it could just be that it wasn’t filled to the max.

Why the level has fluctuated since you topped up is as the sensor takes a good while to update properly. It usually takes mine a good 5-10 miles to update properly.

Establish a base line oil level, and monitor the level over the next thousand miles or so. It shouldn’t really drop. I’m not aware of the 1.5L engine being thirsty for oil like others can be.

According to the service record on the screen, it looks like it was serviced a while ago (the dealership only MOT'd it prior to sale). It's currently on 39k with the next service apparently at 50k. I will probably give it an oil change for piece of mind.
I'll keep an eye on the level in the meantime.
Thanks for the response

OP. Remember Halfords open today, and the last readings says it needs more oil. Do suggest with respect, you get some more oil for it today.

As with any sensor & mentioned elsewhere these things take a while to settle, can alter a bit with temperature & will go up/down with engine on/off scenarios.

Note to self:
When it says top up with1 litre, first do that & then consider anything outstanding, 1 litre could easily be 20% of the full capacity and a not-insubstantial amount for an engine.

Is there not a check point in I-drive for oil level to keep a check on rather than wait for a binary 1 litre required alarm?

I have an oil stick in my f30 335d,honestly the different levels that produces is as bad as the I drive measurements could be different vehicles the measurements are so off. I should know ,dealing with oil burning ,3500 a ltr. for the last 2 years so I am always checking both.....one tip dont put any oil in till the idrive tells you to,real chance of yellow overfill light coming on
