Is this shock absorber failure?

I'm getting a grinding noise going over bumps and the gap between tyre and wheel arch on the offside rear has narrowed.

Is this likely to be shock absorber failure or could it be a broken spring?

Broken spring more likely than shoch, the spring will affect the ride height, the shock will affect how bouncy it is.
