xDrive 2mm malarky and/or Turanza T005 new tyre tread depth
Discussion
M340d with front 225/40R19 and rear 255/35R19. Turanza T005 RFTs.
Fronts are 1x 5mm, 1x 4.7mm tread remaining (difference due replacement one side)
Rears are 4mm at the edges, 2mm middle (ish - wear indicators show probably 1.6 in places).
Surprised by the rear inside wear as pressures are as per the on-board recommendations, if not a little under. But anyway...
After a lot of googling, I'm no different to many people on deciding what replace. Going to ignore the 1% rolling circumference 'rule' and that at new the rears had lower circumference anyway (for now!).
I guess my real question is what is the standard new tyre tread depth for Turanza T005, as I see reports from 6.5mm to 7-8mm?
The former 6.5mm new tread seems poor value but would be within spec if I just changed the rears. The latter, esp at 8mm, would be well out of the 2mm BMW rule (as per TIS and well documented. Still have BMW insured warranty and I suspect diff issues due to tyres could get expensive).
If replacing all four, I can keep the old fronts in the garage for later use if necessary - though pretty hot in there. It'd also limit me to the same tyres in future - used to have F1 Eagles on an older 330d which I liked but IIRC the wear rate is high and perhaps seems like emergency replacement would be harder to come by that the Turanzas (main car - so need to keep it usable).
No all-seasons available for the front, otherwise might be tempted with that due where we live (and if replacements were readily available).

My understanding (from US BMW forums), is that the transfer case (spline) issue is because of the aluminium giubo. LCI F30/31 and other models, now have an all rubber giubo. See also.

My 2016 F30 xdrive has been fine, and I have ignored any ‘2mm difference’ on tyres nonsense.
Goodyear mostly start at 8mm. Many of the Tyre Reviews state starting tread depths.

Annoying that Bridgestone UK don't publish tyre depth, US do - 6.35mm (well: 8/32mm). That aligns with e.g. Camskills and user reviews.
According to tirerack, the new depths do change by size, from 8/32-10/32 (6.35mm -> 7.9mm) - will ask Bridgestone and BMW...
Also US tread depths / compounds may not be identical to European tyres of the same exact name (as they have to conform to their xxx thousand tread-wear guarantees).According to tirerack, the new depths do change by size, from 8/32-10/32 (6.35mm -> 7.9mm) - will ask Bridgestone and BMW...
Considering both my left tyres were at c.4mm and both my rights were at c.6mm when I bought my car, I'm surprised BMW didn't even flag it up on the AUC checks.
I checked and my newly fitted Goodyear F1A3 RFTs on the front had 6.5mm when new.
