Gas struts. F30 boot lid.

My struts are getting weak, and don't open fully (and if I push the boot lid up fully, the wind will blow it down a bit). Has anyone done this by themselves? Is there a cheap tool to compress the struts while fitting. Any other tips. I can live with it as it is - it's just a bit tired.
The less-used hood struts are fine (and much better than having a support stay).

Edit: should read GAS struts, not glass struts. Bloody auto-fill.
