Z4 E86 3.0si 2007 - Thermostat Opening?

Hey Guys!

I was quite surprised to see opening temp. of 97c for my N52 3.0si??

Is that correct? I've always had 86-88c Thermostats in other cars...

Any Thoughts?

I can't think of any that I have had that aren't in the band 82 - 88 deg C.

I researched this when I had my 130i LE and it's normal...

As per the tinterwebs:

"the BMW N52 engine has an electronically mapped thermostat and a variable-speed electric water pump that regulate the coolant temperature dynamically between 95°C and 112°C (203°F - 233°F).

The ECU targets different temperatures depending on your driving style to optimize fuel economy and reduce emissions.

The ECU utilizes four primary temperature maps based on operating conditions:

112°C (233°F) - Economy Mode: Used during low-load driving. Higher temperatures reduce internal engine friction to improve fuel efficiency

105°C (221°F) - Normal Mode: The standard operating range for most daily driving conditions.

95°C (203°F) - High Mode: Used when moderate to higher loads are detected.

80°C (176°F) - Mapped Thermostat Mode: Activated during spirited driving or heavy loads.

The ECU sends an electrical signal to the thermostat's built-in heater to open the valve fully, lowering the temperature to 80°C to maximize performance and prevent engine knock"
