removing E46 Triptronic gear knob

I'm fitting a centre arm rest on my 328 (E46) triptronic, I've found some instructions but the first step is to remove the gear knob, and the instructions say "give it a tug", I've pulled it hard (no giggles please) and it wont come off!

Anyone fitted one of these and sucessfully got the gear know off?

Tiptronic is a Porsche concept.

No BMW has Tiptronic, so your car is a figment of your imagination.

If, on the other hand, you have an automatic E36, I'm sure there must be a Haynes Manual and there are forums out there dedicated to the E36.

Sorry, I wasn't being very helpful earlier, but I get irritated by people seeing my SMG stick and paddles and saying "Ooh, that's tiptronic, isn't it?"

I'm about to put a new gear knob on an 840 Ci...This is a very piece to the E46.

I've done some 'research' and yes apparently it is just a straight 'pull-off'. Like you I tried without success...then I found out that apparently it need 55lbs of upward force to remove! I haven't done it yet (I'll wait until I'm feeling strong) but one guy said: "Make sure you wear your truss, kevlar body vest, gum-shield and crash helmet!"

Zod, chill out FFS, i apologise for using the wrong terminology (i googled it first cos im pretty anal about terminology myself) and I found matches so just suppose that prooves that you can demonstrate that a man can get pregnant using the internet.

For information its an E46 with an auto box but has a manual shift (push the stick up and it changes up pull it back and it changed down). Very impressed (except my manual head tells me to pull the stick back when I want to go from 1st to second). So whats the BMW terminology for this type of gear (guess the Germans probably call it DF34)

It is....I've has 2 of them and somewhere in time BMW changed the direction of upshift from forward to back or the other way around. Salesman says they got it wrong on the earlier car?? (both 5 series by the way)one 99 the next 02.

Anyhow, I thought my Touring had a Steptronic gearbox and that this was in some mysterious way rather redolent of the Porsche Tiptronic system. Whatever the difference, I'd have no shame in asking for help before tampering with my knob.
