Hi,

I'm looking for something family like along the lines of 530D touring, X5 or Audi A6 avant/allroad

Only problem is I can't stomach depreciation. Budget c 20K. Any advice? Safety is number 1 consideration.

of those, an X5 3.0d has tended to be the best, but the new X5 comes next year (with massive waiting list). THe 530d will do pretty well. I fear that the Audi will suffer.

Given your budget, I'd always say the BMW - especially models like the 530d or X5.

Personally, I think a big factor is the pre-eminence of independent BMW mechanics making the BMW a safer and less expensive second hand prospect - hence the residuals

From what I've seen, Allroads do hold their value very well but the 2.5 TDi is slow and the 2.7T is v thirsty.
