E46 Air blowers fault

I have a 2001 330 sport that i bought approx 3mths ago since i have owned it the blowers have not worked as they should, the fans have a mind of there own and come on when they feel like !! somtimes they work for a good while and other times just dont work at all.

I decided to buy replacment computer unit off E-bay, the seller assures me it does work so i will take his word for it as the fault is exactly the same with the new unit!

Does anyone no if there could be anything else stoping the fan from working ?? or anyone else had this problem ??

Excuse me if this is something you have looked at lready but it's not on auto is it?

Our old X5 did this and as I remember it was a sensor that had failed and stopped the climate knowing what to do. Cost about £100 from the rip of dealer

it dosent work in any mode i have tried them all and it just comes on when it feels like it !!

You say your x5 had the problem and it was a sensor! do you know if the sensor was the one in the computer unit or somwere else in the car ?

My guess would be that its the fan control resistor (commonly called the hedgehog) and its located behind the fans somewhere.

A well known common fault on E46 (3 series) and E39 (5 series) cars and normally a warranty item - certainly if you've only had the car a couple of months and bought from a dealer they should replace it without a quibble. I've had a couple done under warranty.

Hi there thanks for the info the car is a 2001 model so i will have to pay for a new one, any idea of what they cost ??
