How Long until the engine loosens up
Discussion
Went to collect the replacement for the Astra VXR yesterday and I would be grateful if someone with knowledge of BMW Petrol engines can tell me how long it will be before the engine loosens up.
It is a 318i M Sport so obviously I am finding it quite a bit less powerful than it's predecssor but having said that it does appear to be struggling (particularly on the hills on the Fosse Way) and was only 2 up at the time. Every car I have owned has eventually improved with age (The Vauxhalls taking about 6/7K miles).
So roughly how many miles do I need to see on the clock before it is fully loosened up.

I reackon their not at their best till at least 40k IMHO
Of all the ones I've had long term experience with, all the 'lower' mile ones have all got better (e30 318i with 27k sold @ 95k, e34 518i 37k sold @ 101k and the hopefully the latest e39 525i will follow suit with its 25k) and have not been at thir best till at least 40k

So do you

I was with a dealer on work experiance (not a BMW one though, but I think it's relevent) and we were taking the pre-reg's to have photos taken at a golf club. None of the cars had more than 3 miles on the clock and hadn't had their PDI's. We got in and he got up to 80, revving to 6000 rpm from cold, when we got there you could smell the paint burning off the exaughst! It was only about a mile up the road and then we just parked them before they had time to warm up.

Mustard I hope not as my car attention has now changed to a Boxster replacement 16 months down the line.
My short list already has 2 BMW's on it.

You gonna keep a car 2years?

No 16 months!!!! The Boxster has already been here 2 months. So the plan is to dispose of the car whilst it is still under warranty and my calculations are that it will be 20 months old .

You might regret that!
I draw to the attention of the Honourable lady my comments of Sunday 24th Septemeber 2006
Will do.
