Have just spoken to BMW customer service regarding changing from run flats to normal tyres after Micheldever Tyres flagged that it may be an issue.

I am told that the car (535d M sport) is set up to only run with run flats and that the fitting of normal tyres will upset the handling etc.

But worse if I fit normal tyres I will be invalidating the warranty.

Not happy as run flats are cr.p

Any similar experience or views.

"fitting of normal tyres will upset the handling etc."

Can't possibly be any worse surely!

Now done 27,000 miles and just renewed the rears.
Fronts OK but getting very noisy.

Confusion, I have just spoken to BMW dealers in Worcester who tell me that it does not invalidate the warranty on my 530d,bought in January this year, I can not wait to shed the run flats but will watch this space with interest for the next few weeks until they are ready for swapping.

Absoulte boswellox. Take the MINI as an example. You can buy it with or without runflats and the wheels + suspension are identical.

What about the BMW engineer who came out to change my battery in his BMW 535d touring, that he'd removed the run-flats from ???

I guess this must have nothing to do with the fact that run flats cost loads more than none run flat's.

No, no absolutely not yes of course it couldn't.

I have to think that this is rubbish. There was a recent EU directive that stipulated that any car, serviced in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, had to be covered under warranty. The same goes for the parts - you have to use equal quality parts (or better) and as a result the manufacturers have nothing to go back on a claim. So as long as you fit relevant speed rating tyres with the correct dimensions its an equal part (if not better since a normal tyre will be better anyway), then it MUST be covered.

As to this argument the fact that the M-Sport comes with 18" wheels as standard (with run-flats). But the 19" wheels are normal tyres. So quite how they expect to handle that in a court of law is beyond me. Its rubbish and to be honest I would write a very stroppy letter to BMW - its madness and clearly a cartel. You have to fit certain tyres of a certain type or you invalidate your warranty..... yeah right....

Push back and tell them where to shove it...

When I spoke to our dealer a couple of weeks ago about the run flats on a 120D M Sport he did say to me that they could be changed for non runflats when ready for replacement.

There was no mention of it invalidating the warranty.

Many thanks confirmed my suspicions, will be drafting a suitable missive forthwith.

Be warned though.....your insurers may not think much of you changing them.....

As someone who has gone through the RF saga with 2 MINI Cooper S's I've had a full repetoire of stories, ranging from "the RFs use different wheels" to "it'll invalidate your insurance, oh and you'll need to sign a disclaimer".

The last comment came from BMTR in Brum, who whilst they would fit non-RFs, did make it obvious, the potential of my actions.....that comment did make me stop and think.

I've just bought a lovely M340i as my daily and I'd like to replace the RFTs with PS4Ss.

I'm being lazy as I've not spoken to BMW so forgive me, but what the general view with regards to warranty these days?

Warranty might be different, so ideally speak to BMW

But re insurance, just tell them and ensure you use the OEM spec non-RFT tyres and you’ll be fine

Ask them to show you where it says that in the Warranty Terms and Conditions. You'll have a long wait.

Insurers will want replacement tyres to be of the same size and speed rating, nothing else.
