X5 Service schedule and approx. cost ..............
Discussion
I believe the engine is the same as 3/5 series.
Service is very 13-15k depending on how its driven.
Standard BMW of Oil, Insp1, Oil, Insp2, Oil, Insp1 . . . .
Oil service about £150 at dealer
Insp 1 approx £250
Insp 2 approx £400
Brake Fluid change every 2 years, not sure about coolant.
25mpg is optimistic unless you're on the motorway all the time, especially in an auto.
My manual 330ci does 31mpg on a run, <25mpg around town.

Hope you get it cheap. A petrol, manual X5 will not be easy for resale. An auto diesel a much better proposition. Then again, if you buy cheap, you can sell cheap.
But in fact, think you would do better getting an auto 4.4 which would probably return more or less the same mpg as a 3.0 petrol.

I am suitably unimpressed with the mpg figures for the 3.0i.
One of the reasons that i wanted the 3.0i was for the manual box, I can't see myself ever driving an auto and as far as I can see the V8 cars were unavailable in manual form - is that correct ??
Maybe I should go back to looking for an M5 !!
cheers.

I have a non sport 3.0 manual x5. I recognise it won't be the easiest resale because most people into X5's want the bling sport versions. Having said that I see the car as more of a super jacked up 530 four wheel drive estate car, in which the manual box makes more sense if you like driving. I've read a couple of reviews agreeing with this stating that the sport ride is too choppy and that the extra weight and kit of v8 makes the diffence less noticeable than the power difference would suggest. Does the v8 have recirculating ball steering as in the e39 model?
fuel consumption is long term 22mpg probably does 30 on a run, I wish my car had a sixth gear sometimes as the gearing is quite short meaning 80mph is 4000 rpm, (my auto 528 is 2000rpm much quieter, less wear, less fuel). But around country A and B roads it's a blast good visibility smooth ride from 17" wheels, leans a bit but is agile and hangs on like a sports car. If I bought another one I'd look for a non sport 4.4 se for the same smooth ride but a bit more umpf and the v8 rumble. I understand the later valvtronic v8 is extremely fuel efficient but I'm not sure they still do "se" models with this engine aka rocking horse droppings! Ian p.s reckon my 80k 2001 manual is worth about £13k private

thanks for the info.
i'm looking at a 2001 manual sport 3.0i in silver with under 40k miles and one owner for just over £15k.
for that price I can't really go wrong if I stick 15k miles on it over the year and then shift it on.
the test will be when i drive it at the weekend, i might hate it !!
thanks

From what I've managed to find out, the MPG of the 3.0i will be very similar to 4.4 V8 petrol. As for the auto box, it's perfect for the missus as she can't grind 'em, and all you have to do is flick it to the left and use it as a manual if you fancy some fun. Early 4.4s are the same money and much better on the ears.
As for servicing, find yourself a good indipendent and you don't have to worry about BMW and their £100+ an hour labour charges!

I have just bought an x5 m sport 2011 after running an jaguar xj8 3. 2 litre 2002 for 12 years, the mpg was bad on the xj8 around 16 mpg town and about 28 motorway, but what surprised me was the insurance the best quote I could find was £620 a year for the BMW x5 m.

Well done for resurrecting a 13 year old thread in your first post!Edited by elcid12334 on Tuesday 16th July 05:04
