Just bought a E36 325 tds

I have just purchased a mint condition 1995 325 tds and its fantastic 
Having always loved the M3 alloys of that era (I think one of the best BMW made ) I am going to get a set but everyone I speakk to tells me that I should chip the car cos I will get better performance; and better ecomony when going slow.
Now i am always dubious of such claims. Can you really get the best of both world or is the economy claims a myth?
