BMW M52 timing tools

Hello,

Thinking of changing the headgasket on my 328i myself instead of taking it to a garage. According to all the instructions I would need the timing tools to hold the crankshaft, camshaft and flywheel at TDC. All seems to make sense.

Does anyone know ehere I can get these tools for a decent price. Don't want to spend circa £200 when it is probably the only time I will ever use them.

If the engine has blown the head gasket due to overheating,the alloy block will most likely be scrap due to it being warped.It isnt possible simply change the gasket with the alloy engines.There is also the issue of retorqing the head to the block-which can only be done once from the factory,and loss of compression ect.
Time for a replacement engine.

More uneducated responses me thinks. A 10mm drill bit can be used for locking the crank,through a hole located on the n/s of the block. Cams need to be on the rock number1 if you look at the far end of the cams they have squared ends. These can be measured with a straight edge. Also its worth marking it all with tip ex just for peace of mind.Good luck.

If you use the 'cowboy' procedure as stated above your engine will not be timed correctly.
The correct plates and pins can be bought through euro car parts.

So why do they make tools for a factory only job? And as for the "cowboy" comment I think with being a BMW trained senior tech for 15 years can this really apply to me? If your doing a job yourself its usually for a cost issue,so why buy tools your only going to use once?
