My 2004 318i sport tourings clutch has started juddering on pulling off all the time, hot or cold. Is it likely to be a worn clutch plate in which case I will steer clear of the BMW dealerships or something such as oil leak etc in which case it could be covered by warranty?

How many miles has the car done?
Juddering is an indication of a problem other than a straightforward worn clutch, particularly if it isnt slipping.
The most common causes are oil contamination from either a rear crankshaft oil seal or a gearbox 1st motion shaft seal.
Judder can also be caused by a soft or damaged engine or gearbox mounting.

Hi Talkwrench

Thanks for this, its done 23K and theres no clutch slippage. Do you think the work you think may be indicated be covered by BMWs warranty?

I would certainly imagine it is a warranty job as it isnt usually caused by 'normal wear and tear' at that relatively low mileage.
Is there any evidence of oil leakage around the clutch housing?
