Really miffed - I only just bought the car! I thought I could hear the exhaust blowing and got it checked out - only had it a week!!! Garage said it was the two flexi joints on the front are holed & blowing.
Got price of £500 plus VAT to replace the whole thing (including the 2x catalytic convertors) or £293 plus VAT to replace the two flexi joints. Which option does anyone out there thinks the best? Do the Cats go on these - or will it last if I just get the flexi joints done....cheers for any replies Jayne PS would this fail an MOT with these blowing? As the MOT was only done 28/05/07 (a policeman MOT!)Man in garage said it should have failed the MOT with this problem - any comments...ta x

Depends on how severe blow is and if it affected emissions.

It should be on the advice sheet though at very least!

You can buy multi use flexi joints and weld those on, main dealers probably won't do that back a decent MOT/service centre will do it. Expect labour to be about £60-80

Ive just got lumbered into changing the stainless flexi joints on my mates RS4 downpipes, the Flexi's cost £15 each. Its a bit of a messy job and you need to be able to weld stainless (TIG) - not the sort of thing I would do regulary - but they can be done by anyone with the right gear. Evidently a pair of new downpipes are over £1500, so I'm expecting a large drink for this little job.

Does it still have any BMW warranty, as I know they used to replace stuff that was an MOT fail - if so just take it for an MOT, get a fail notice and take it to BMW to fix - even with the excess you will be miles better off.

Similar thing has happened to my MG CDTI (320d engine). The pipe can not be replaced unless it is a cut and weld job. The best they can do is fit a new CAT which has the flexipipe attached. It is being done today for £240.00.

I went to Tom Tully Tyres in Speke (by the airport), but there's loads of places that will do it. I'm a regular tyre customer (as I've got a heavy right foot and an M5) so they only charged me for what the materials cost - £30 for a metre of heavy duty 54mm (or so) stainless flexi-tube!
