question re: bmw sat nav
Discussion
Hi,
I'm considering a bmw 5 series for my next car, probably a 530d (E60)
Can anybody point out the difference between navigation - business and
navigation - professional.
IIRC professional is the dearer of the 2 systems, is it worth seeking out a car with this fitted or will the business system do the job?
thanks in advance,
B

Pro is for the proper monitor, either a 16:9 or a 4;3 display, business is a small 2" lcd screen that just has arrows on it.
Pro systems will fecth a better resale than business, as its more desireable(sp?)
if you just want a-b routing then go for business, if you want full system intergration for a TV, OB computer or phone then pro.

The screen is much bigger than 2" for business nav. It's the same height as the pro-nav but is 4:3 rather than 16:9
The nav in all the pro-nav cars I've tried has been dog slow to use and I actually find the business nav (just arrows rather than a map) much easier and clearer to use as there is less going on on the screen

We have pro nav fitted in both our cars and we are really quite impressed with it.
It is a little slow at times and I know I once went past a junction I was supposed to take because it didn't update quick enough.
The 120D came with it as part of a media package and was excellent value for money. It included Nav, Bluetooth, Hifi upgrade and Electric Adjustable Seats.
The 330D Coupe was a different proposition and the Bluetooth and Nav came as seperate options and between them came to about £500 more than the 4 options mentioned above.

Hi
I have the professional sat nav in my 530d and it is great....I used the good old 'Tom Tom' in my previous car as it had no sat nav! It was great -the BMW sat nav took a little while to get used to but now I've got use to it its good as Tom! Even tells you when you have reached the door number - being a district nurse in a busy city I need one to be reliable and quick - I honnestly have no problems with it,can't say about the buisness one though - not tried it. Hope this helps. J x

The Professional Navigation system has a full colour 16:9 widescreen display which shows you exactly where you are on a map - very similar to Tom Tom and other similar after market systems. The Business Nav only has a smaller square screen and it does not have mapping at all - all it shows are arrows showing you where to go. I have a similar system in my 3 Series (Smartnav) and I find it quite irritating as you are dependent on what the unit tells you to do - if you're in a new area you have absolutely no idea where you are!! But with the Professional Nav you know exactly where you are and can create your own shortcuts as you have a birds eye view of the surrounding area
I have also updated a speed camera database to my Pro Nav which creates a little camera icon everywhere there is one
The Pro nav also shows you (with the use of icons) traffic conditions, nearest petrol pumps, shops, supermarkets etc tec.
On the whole I'd recommend the Pro nav as it's miles better.
Hope this helps you......
