Driving back from training earlier and pulled up at a set of lights on a dual carrigeway, half mile straight, NSL, 3 lanes into 2 after about 100 yds, road totally empty. Saxo in lane 1 me in lane 2 and then a black Skoda rs with tinted windows pulled up in lane 3. Exchanged a glance with the Skoda drive and waited for the green. I got a perfect launch (don't practice much as I like my clutch)and pulled a couple of car lengths ahead in 1st, changed swiftly into 2nd, he drew level then flew past with ever increasing pace. As I reached max revs in 3rd he had at least 10 car lengths on me. I then gave up!
How fast are these things when tuned? If you see a black Skoda reg S14 PAS don't race it unless you've got something quicker than a 330 petrol

220bhp is quite easy via a remap. There are a few pushing out around 300bhp (new turbo, intercooler, injectors, exhaust, etc) and think there are a couple running around 350+ bhp... eek

I remember a couple of years ago having a demo in an S2000. The car was brand new with only a couple of miles on the clock and as we joined a roundabout an Octavia VRS pulled onto the roundabout from a junction in front of us.

He was absolutely flying and there was not a chance of catching him even though the next section was a clear 1 mile stretch.

I think I'll keep saving for an M3. From what I've read about my car its not easy to tune or cheap £/bhp. If only it had been raining, rwd might have given me the edge.

Well the Octavia VRS is packing the 2.0T FSI in 200PS trim from the <Golf GTi/Leon FR/A3 2.0T>, so I'd fancy my chances against one in standard trim. But that motor has been made to knock out 240bhp in the Leon Cupra and 260bhp in the S3, so there's tuning potential, but I think staying on boost would be rather important.

But by that token there's quite a lot of tuning potential in the 330i, if you've got the cash/will for it!

One modification i would like to make is to the exhaust. I fitted a Remus centre section (just a steel pipe instead of a mid box) to my last car, a V6 Vectra and it sounded great under acceleration and on the overrun but not too loud. Does anyone have one of these on a 6 cyclinder BMW? What do they sound like? My car sounds a bit quiet in standard form. Where could I find a supplier? I don't want to change for an different backbox as this will probably be too loud. (I realise that fitting an after market exhaust will not bring tuned Skoda beating performance!)

I've been in a Ibiza Cupra at well over 160 mph at V Max, these things can be tuned to buggery!

You should have followed until he reached a corner as they get 'interesting' when decellerating from high speed yikes

The cop use Skoda VRS Octavias unmarked where I live. Luckily I drive a slow Ford transit most days of the week.

No need to save for an M3 as your 330 can be tuned to approx 270 with ease for £1500.00. if you want to spen a little more you'll get an easy 280bhp if it's remaped to run on a minimum of 98 octane too. If you do want M3 bhp a SC is an easy fit (but more costly).

Don't forget thet loads of E46 M3's are not producing 343bhp...they are nearer to 320 most of the time.

I have scared the life out of a few M3's with my E46 estate! Bold claim, I know, but i kid you not. FYI, Ray @ West Tuning is the guy I used and am still very happy with.

I had a look at http://www.west-tuning.com/bmw-e46-3point0i.htm. I didn't think a non turbo petrol engine would see an increase of 24bhp from a remap. What do they mean by 'vanos reprofiled'?
I'm not against tuning in general (I will be changing the centre section of the exhaust and air filter though, these are easy to return to standard when its time to sell) but I think my money would be best spent on an M3 when funds allow. I won't see any extra value in the resale price and although its bad to be a badge snob I'd rather have an M3 than a tuned 330.

Get yourself an M3, forget all the hype about them under performing, £500 on a remap and induction kit will not only give you some serious horses under your righ foot(340+), but also the ability to keep up with 911's RS4's and most other cars that want to have a drag off the lights.

I'm on my second M3, and theres not much else that will keep up for the cash, plus it fits 4 adults and your getting 35mpg on the motorway.

The only down sides I found are keeping your foot off the loud button, the noise an grunt is very intoxicating, and it doesn't look like a super car
