Fantastic car and fantastic value...buy one. I managed about 17mpg in mine and that was usually pressing on. Never had any problems with any of my X5's, but agreed get a proper warranty just in case. The pano roof is worth having....you'll never open it but it lightens the cabin.

Agree with the above - fantastic car. I sold mine a couple of months ago, but quite possibly will buy another later in the year. I did around 40k miles in mine - on a run I'd get low to mid 20's mpg, round town with my foot nailed down it was around 12-13mpg (round a track it did around 5mpg!!).
Other than the obvious engine differences, the 4.8 has the bodykit bits, 20' wheels, adjustable air suspension, lumbar support, etc, etc - I tried a 4.4 in comparison and personally found the 4.8 worth the extra £15k (they're weren't quite as good value when I bought mine!). The noise the 4.8 makes is incredible (far nicer than the 4.4) and personally I found the ride was smoother as well, possibly due to the air suspension - the 4.4 seemed to transmit sharp ridges into the cabin which the 4.8 didn't, even though it was on the bigger wheels. The handling of the 4.8 is beyond what you'd expect from such a big car - only low speed handling, such as small roundabouts, catch it out due to the weight transfer.
Other than the grip from the 315 section tyres (I also had a set of M+S wheels + tyres for mine) what ever people say, they can actually go offroad rather well - doubt it would challenge a Defender, but I regularly used to take mine into forests to places that a car would have no chance of going (I know, since I tried the same track in a car once!).
I tended to drive about 4 hours a day in mine, and unlike any other car I've owned, I always felt fine when I got out at the end of the journey.
Buy one!

Just sold mine after 12 months of ownership and 32,000 miles.
Great car, fast, comfortable, good for the family and other crap. 18.6mpg average and I don't tend to hang about.

It still had the original tyres on the front (35,000 miles) and one set on the rear at 25,000ish. servicing costs are no more than a 5 series but a warranty is a must if older than three years. They also like a drop of oil and this must be watched and topped up accordingly.
It was 18 months old and a bargain for the man who bought it as it was spotless and had lost 1/2 its original value in that time.
All in all a great car.
