120d drivers

What is it with 05 plate 120d drivers, I'm sat behind one this morning at a set of traffic lights, on the way to work, we both pull off, he's carved into the outside lane on a dual carrage way and booted it to overtake a couple of cars, I'm drowning in a plume of black smoke and not making much progress, as he finally clears the last car, he sits in the outside lane for about a mile going as fast as he can so I give the loud peddle a squeeze to overtake and a quick flash to remind him, and he waits until 500m before the next junction to pull over and let me pass.

At this point I've given the loud peddle a push and overtake him, with a look out the side window the acknowedge that he gave it his best, and I get the, "If I don't look I havent seen that car overtook me..!!" look, so he then has another go at racing me on the next carrageway... I'm thinking WTF and give it 7600rpm in third, and slow down to let him catch up at the next junction, but still no, cheers mate good to have a blast in our BMW's...

Just wanted to share that one as most enthusiastic drivers i've met give the nod before or after a good burst of speed.

Well I haven't really studied drivers of 05 registered 120d's in particular, but perhaps they're like most other motorists and don't enjoy being given a "quick flash"...?

I'd consider a quick flash to be the kindest way of reminding them that the right hand lane is for overtaking only..!!!

I think it's not case of '120d drivers'

it's more a case of the 'modern turbo diesel driver'

modern 'performance diesels' have brought much more bang per buck and created a new breed of people who are hiterto unfamiliar with cars that are reasonably quick

to them, they believe that they are in a 'fast' car and able to compete with those who drive properly fast car

Interesting idea, but I think a 120d is probably worth a good deal more than an E36 M3 relic that's been to the moon and back.

Not entirely sure what you're saying there, but I think what you mean to say is that you bet that your 120d could keep up with things that are 'properly fast', whatever that means. I think a definition of what properly fast is needs to be made here...and it isn't 5 secs to 60 or 300bhp anymore. I think it's 4 secs to 60 and 500bhp these days to qualify.

There are so many cars with 200+ bhp that you really do have to have something VERY powerful to really beat others by a significant margin. My BMW Z4M Coupe for example ... I was being followed by a 330d a few weeks back and couldn't shake him or see an enormous difference between us off the line. And I've supposedly got a 150bhp advantage plus less weight! The modern turbo diesel really is a different animal entirely and deserves respect.

my point is that most people chose their cars based on budget - that includes purchasing, maintaining and, vitally here, fuelling

I'm sure that you can run a new 120d for less per month than an old M3

5 (even 2) years ago the kind of performance/£ that you can get out of 120d was unheard of

therefore, those who used to trundle around in average 2.0 petrol/diesel euroboxes can now 'afford' to run something reasonably nippy like a 120d(and believe that they are truly rapid)

I've been driving an A3 2.0 TDi for 4 years now. Ok, it's not as quick as a 120d but shouldn't be too different. Point is, I've just been through the process of deciding on it's replacement and sampled a range of 'fast' £30-£40k cars. The same driver (i.e me) wouldn't have a hope in hell of keeping up with an R32 or 335i (neither of which is sub 5 secs to 60)in the A3.

You're a lucky guy driving the Ultima, but the fact remains that a 120d isn't a fast car whoever is driving it. Would you have tried to race an M3 in the 120d?

The point is the speed differential between a 120d and M3 is the same as an M3 to an Ultima, if a 120 d driver looked in his mirror he would see a 3 series shopping trolley probably a 320d which he would be quicker than, so he would not move over, if an M3 saw an Ultima in his mirrors would he move over, he would know he was definately slower, this is just part of the big game called driving

thanks for explaining the game of driving to me

personally, if something is pinned to my back bumper and I can't distinguish whether it is the 'shopping trolley' or 'cooking' version I do the decent thing and get out of the way (and keep the throtte buried to see if he/she can put money where mouth was)

I certainly hope people adopt the same mentality when my 335i arrives.... otherwise I'm gonna get pretty frustrated by the tdi crowd

My wifes just ordered a 120d,cos they are quite nippy motors and good fun.She will get out of your way, unless she's in my 335D cos then she will have great pleasure in making you go backwards
