Tips with idrive?
Discussion
If you pull and hold the controller to the rear of the car you will find that you can avoid going through all the submenu's and it will take you to whatever your last screen was in the entertainment section. You can also use this shortcut technique to navigate around all the other main menu items.
For instance if you previously used the phone book list in the communications section and you are currently viewing the navigation map you can push the cotroller forward and hold it for 2 seconds and it will take you straight into the phone list, after you have finshed in the phone list you can hold the controller to the right and it will take you straight back to the navigation map, pull and hold it to the rear and it will take you to your last screen you used in the entertainments section, cd radio ipod etc.
To further that if you are in e.g. the navigation section you can get back to the main menu by holding the controller to the right for 2 seconds and it will take you straight back to the main menu.
This function really makes it ridiculously easy to use but a lot of people are not aware of it.

The update has to be done by a dealer. Takes about 4 hours. It took me a while to find a dealer willing to do the work. In the end, I had to 'emphasise' the problems with iDrive being slow, sticking etc. so the dealer could claim the work back on the warranty. It's also worth getting the mp3 retrofit at the same time (if you don't have it) so you can play mp3 files from a CD-R in your in-dash cd player.
