I have a 3.0 2003 (allbeit now supercharged). Tough one, I've not had any problems with my Z4, it appears to be a very reliable car. Therefore I wouldn't let age or reasonable mileage put you off. If you get a newer smaller capacity you'll always wish you had the bigger engine and all the toys than come standard on the 3.0..... upto you though. Personally that counts more than having an 2004 number plate...
You should be able to pick up a 2003 3.0 for around £16k.

This was covered in depth here a few weeks ago, with many contributions from many owners.
The best bit is that for the price of a leggy Boxster you can buy a much younger, better specified Z4, perhaps even buying from a main dealer (with all the reassurance and protection that goes with it)rather than a private sale Boxster Those looks grow on you, the straight six is so smoooooooooth!
Yep, I do look longingly at the silver grilled 3.0, but the 2.5 aint that bad (well I think it's rather good!)
Go for it!
