Tiptronic gearbox failure on 02 330D, Advice please.

My brother's 79k '02 330D Touring recently rolled to a halt with no drive.
Was trailered to garage, and they've advised that the gearbox needs repairing or replacing.
A couple of questions:
1) 79k miles and g'box failure? Is this common? Are BMW into goodwill gestures?
2) Apparently there were two types of Tiptronic box used - a GM one and a ZF one. Didn't surprise me to hear it was a GM one that had failed, but maybe I'm prejudiced. Any thoughts on whether one is regarded as better than the other?
3) I don't think that anyone is into repairing boxes as such these days. I guess they take your old box in part ex and then refurbish that for the next client. Can anyone recommend a good supplier / agent within 50 miles of Salisbury?
