Whilst investigating the Z3 classifieds on PH I notice that not that many are selling apart from a few that have been on for a while and are 2.8 or 3.0 Schnitzers e.t.c.

My partners 2.2 Sports Sapphire http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/212090.htm has been in the PH classifieds a few days now and whilst I can't expect much activity yet I thought I would have had a few enquiries by now! After all it is the nicer sounding 6 cylinder in metallic black with the 17 inch BMW multi spoked wheels and, IMHO, looks the dogs!

I would have thought that with the weather improving there would be some interest being shown, so is it a case of:

1. Being patient...someone will come along soon and buy it or
2. Advertising elsewhere such as Autotrader or other appropriate sites...any suggestions gratefully received?
3. Are we asking too much for it...we need to sell quickly so I have priced it accordingly and looking at other 2.2's I think it is a fair price....am I way off the mark with the price?

All comments greatly appreciated from my fellow knowledgeable PHers thumbup

It might be worth looking at the Glasses guide values on the Vauxhall site.

I think the Z3 is really suffering from the widely-held belief that they're a girls' car and a bit rubbish - reinforced by the move to take the Z4 up a level in size, power, styling etc.

Given that I haven't driven one I can't comment on the validity of that either way... but I agree that in black with those wheels, it looks the mutt's nuts and I'd not be ashamed to be seen in one... so best of luck!

I'd been looking at buying a Z3 recently, but there's a couple of things that have put me off.

1) How hard it is to find one with aircon
2) Fairly uninspiring to drive (and the last one I drove was a 3.0 Sport)
3) Price

I'm not trying to slag them off, but they aren't BMW's greatest statement in dynamics, and they're all pretty poorly spec'd in usefult things you'd expect in a BMW - most don't have aircon or electric hoods, which by today's standards are seen as expected kit.

I appreciate that they're all a few years old, but the underlying technology is even older (parts of the E30 suspension going into it).

Starting prices seems to be cira £5k for an early 1.9, pushing the rest of the prices up, and to me there's not enough of a differentiation between Z3s and early Z4s in price to make them a compelling choice.

I think that's the killer. Early Z4 2.2s of similar mileage are around the 12-13k mark, and frankly look better value. Z3 prices to me, seem to defy logic a bit. This will sound harsh (sorry), but £8k seems expensive for a 6 year old high-miler with the mid-range engine on a car that wasn't particularly highly regarded when it was new. There's a lot of choice of sporty vehicles around the £8k point, and whilst your Z3 looks very clean and has probably been really well looked after, there's nothing that makes it stand out particularly.

Maybe wait a week, see if you get any interest, then drop the price by £250? It'll look a lot cheaper then, and possibly encourage someone to enquire.

Ok matey - couple of points:

1) The price doesn't look far out, but I would get a 7 in front of it purely as subliminally it looks better value, even if it's only £7850.

2) Get it polished up properly, get the wheels nice and black (Armourall), do under the wheel arches. Get it looking the nice glossy black that it is, it looks quite dull and flat in those pics. having said that, it could just be the light/camera ... have you got a polarising filter to cut out all the reflections?

3) Clean and vac the interior, including cleaning the pedal rubbers ... it might seem anal but a stunning looking car attracts interest.

4) Wait til we get a smidge of sunshine, then take a shot with the roof down

5) But, most importantly, get it MOT'd! No-one is going to buy a car with one month test on.

Good luck and give us a shout when you're coming up if you need a hand lugging some furniture smile

The reference to our 'Indian' summer might not be helping.....you'd have more success selling a rubber dinghy right now

Yeah thanks Al....just after I posted you I found a red un on Auto Trader. Look for 850ci, trader only. It's fairly low mileage and less that 9 big ones

I think the price looks ok, but agree with Al on the 7 prefix.

It really depends on how quick you wish to sell the car. The 2.2's a cracker, but you need a buyer who's looking for the right car and it'll sell. If you want a quick sale, then I'm afraid the price against some of the other stuff available (as already said) will be a challenge.

Advertising a car with 1 month MOT, madness.

Stick it on Zroadster.net too.

Just realised something ... if it's a 2001 car what on earth have you got a bog standard looking X-plate on it that makes it looks two years older!!!!

If it was obviously a private plate then that is one thing, but it's not, it just looks like an X-plate car. Shouldn't it be on an 01 or 51?

(no idea if Zs were out on an x-plate but my point still stands from an outsiders POV)
Sept 00 to Mar 01 X Plate

Mar 01 to Sept 01 Y Plate

Sept 01 to March 02 51 Plate

wink but yes your right Prefix plates can make a car look dated these days (unfairly!)

ah ... I was forgetting that there was never an "01" plate.
