Folks, wifeys 318i has sprung a leak.
Looks like it's coming from where the oil filter housing meets the engine. Does anyone have knowledge of how this comes off or at the least a diagram?

Bloody cars. irked

I think it's the M40 engine? ie 1.8 (9?) 16v 4 pot.

Mike,

Whats the chassis number and I'll have a look on my TIS discs.

It lists two engine types for a 98 318i Saloon - M43TU & N42

Gasket 6 and O'ring 5 are the usual suspects, it's fairly easy disconect the battery and remove the polybelt and alternator then remove the oil filter housing.

If it's an N42, then there are simply three bolts holding the housing to the cyl head. Two of them are threaded into the cyl- head, the one right at the front screws into the housing. There is just one, large coffin seal between housing and cyl head.

[er, hang on. I'm getting mixed up with N52. Sorry.]

Thanks folks.
Nigel - spot on. Just scampered down to dick lovett and managed to squeeze in through the door before closing. Bought said gasket, and rocker gasket for some reason even though it's not leaking nuts

All off, new one fitted within 45 mins, no leak. biggrin

Regards to all,
Mike.
