Z4 standard stereo upgrade

I have a 2003 Z4 with standard 6-speaker stereo, and I'm looking to upgrade. Has anyone done this?
I've not been priced for an upgrade to the Carver system, but I'm sure it will be mega-expensive, so I'll leave that just now. I really want some subs, but no-one local can fit anything other than the under-the-seat variety, and I'm looking for a little more kick than that.
A local place will upgrade the headunit, amp and speakers for around £1000. That includes a 400watt amp, new speakers, kenwood ipod/usb headunit, as well as witing in a parrot handsfree kit. Tempting, but I really really really want subs. Has anyone done this job before, or have any advice?
On the subject - I bought a Snooper Sapphire a few weeks ago, and it's so quiet as to be useless. Is it possible to wire this into the stereo so the stereo will mute, play the alert, then resume playing my music? Snooper only has a 3.5mm headphone output.
I'm in Scotland, if that helps. I went to that place in Cumbernauld (V-TEC I think?). They were helpful, but not able to get subs in the Z.
