No idea which engine. How do I find out? Had a six speed box... Sounded a bit straight 6. Two exhaust pipes. Ideas?

Anyway, quite perky, a nice drive, not wallowy in the corners, point and shoot. Quietly impressed. And the indicators worked.

Err...ask the owner? Seriously though any of the latest z4 have 6 speed box and most except 2 ltr have twin pipes. Take your pick from 2.5, 2.5si and 3.0si. Currently on my second z4 and the updated versions are much better ride and engine note than 1st gen models.

Ah, the exhaust note certainly sounds pleasant for a standard non-V8 car.

Now that I've really had a go, it lacks something. Only revs to ~6000rpm, too. Still, nice enough. Blue skies, today, too!

Strange. Not a 3.0 then, our Coupe revs happily to 7 and goes pretty well.

Ah another sxoc'er ;o)

I found the 3.0se I drove to be quite good compared to my S1 s14a, ok it wasn't as quick but a nicer package all round and went round corners well enough - very easy to drive! redface)

Had a passenger ride in a Z4m roadster (at 24 they wouldn't let me pilot it myself) and that was brilliant... I'm now torn between a 3 yr old 3.0 for say £18k or 30k for a 1 year old zm4 from a dealer -- the devil on my shoulder says get the z4m as you only live once ;o)

I haven't driven the newer facelift 3.0 and wonder what that is like in comparison smile

Possibly. I thought there was a 2.2 6 as well? The 2.5 isn't the quickest thing, but certainly revs beyond 6 (and needs it)....

A 3.4L straight six delivering 300bhp ... what other sound system do you need.

Getting twinges of regret now the weathers improved having traded mine in a couple of months a go.

Mmm do they sound quite tasty then? In some ways the Z4m rasp is not as nice as the bassey burble of the normal 3.0, is the 3.4 roadster like the former or the later smile

In terms of audio equipment I would hope that they had something better than the entry level z4 system, do they come with the middle of the range 10 speaker setup - they seem quite well specified apart from that but havent been able to find any information on this smile

I will have to find a alpina to look at, I have yet to see or have a ride in one yet but quite interested as money is burning a hole in my pocket ;o)

I had been pitting the 3.0z vs a nissan 350z however the 3.0 was nicer drive and easier to pilot (the 350z is quite a bulky car for a 2 seater). Just which that the 3.0 had more grunt so the alpina may make the decision very easy indeed redface)

Feel free to pm or email me to tell me more smile

Kind regards,

Just put a deposit on 3.0L Z4 today; 2003 first gen only 8000 miles..for less than £17k - it's a unmarked little beaty . Anyway I bought it for some track fun & another trip to the 'ring'. What's the advise on most effective upgrades i.e exhaust, brakes [although these seemed very strong] engine chips etc.. ?

I dare say you're in for a good time, judging by my limited experience of the Z4. smile

I test drove a 2007 BMW Z4 3.0SI coupe last week and absolutely loved it.
The engine sound was deep and addictive, helped by the twin exit exhaust which i thought should be like the M-series exhaust (quad) as standard with the 3.0 -

The older style only had the 2.2 engines along with the 3.0 but now they've refreshed the model with a 2.0 engine producing 150 bhp which averages 37mpg which in my opinion isn't bad. They've also brought out the 2.5 which i think replaced the 2.2 - its more powerful and also more economical so avoid the 2.2 engine. They've kept the 3.0 and included the 3.0SI which adds a few more ponies but only averages 31mpg (approx).

Ive currently got an Audi A4 oil burner so unfortunately have to opt for the 2.0 which is the most economical but might stretch to the 2.5 - Due to the distance im travelling, id struggle to justify the 3.0 -

Looking at what comes standard with both 2.0 and 2.5 models, the 2.5 only gets bigger wheels and slightly nicer seats, oh and 20 bhp more ish so i dont think its worth it myself - any other opinions or suggestions on alternitive cars?

Oh, mine was the 2.5. Spotted the badge on the side by the indicator.

It was certainly fun to drive but did lack power (depends what you're used to, I guess).

There is little real world difference in economy between the 2.5 & 3.0. The 3.0 is very torquey, and doesn't need to be worked very hard to move at a decent rate, gearing is longer too. We average 29.6 according to the trip computer, which is impressive for a car of this performance. I'd very surprised if you could achieve a genuine 37mpg out of the 2.0 in normal driving.

No idea where you go the idea the Si is more powerful - its the base model (Si or Sport), both share the same 267bhp engine.
