BMW 120d - running problems/BMW customer service
Discussion
Hi
Been running my '07 120d M-Sport for 6 weeks now, and in that time done 4000 trouble free miles. In fact, been majorly impressed by the car all round, even the ride on 18's isn't so bad...
However, recently it has started to suffer major power loss above 2500 RPM, which can sometimes be cured by turning the engine off and back on again.
Does anybody have any ideas on what the fault is? Is it common on these cars?
On the same vein... I took the car on Sunday to my local stealer, to see if
the problem was serious. The sales guy that I found (after 5 minutes of searching the dealership) told me to "go home and ring BMW customer services". When I asked whether continuing to drive the car would cause more damage, he said not to bother worrying about knackering the engine, "as that's the point of a warranty"... suffice to say not very impressed, I'll be diverting my next £26k the way of another marque.
Anybody else suffered from either of the above?
Cheers
Chris

Think you're being over sensitive here. What did you want him to do on a Sunday afternoon? That is why BMW have a 24hr helpline, they are very helpful. Have you rung them yet? Have you got the car into a dealer? The salesman knew you'd driven the car there so it can't have been that bad a problem.Been running my '07 120d M-Sport for 6 weeks now, and in that time done 4000 trouble free miles. You're right though, one flippant comment from an off-guard salesman on a Sunday afternoon is probably worth writing off one of the best car makers in the world for.

At leat they are open on a sunday, FFS what do you expect a salesman to suggest?
Ring BMW assist, that is what they are for, get a techy out and he will know what to do.... that is why they are there.
If not then take your '26k' and buy an Audi.
Thanks to those who have replied.Ring BMW assist, that is what they are for, get a techy out and he will know what to do.... that is why they are there.

I would expect a so-called sales "professional" that is employed by a premium marque to say something along the lines of... let me think...
"Sorry you are having these problems with your 6 week old BMW, let me put you through to BMW assist who can help you as unfortunately we have nobody around who can help you directly on a Sunday"
Or am I asking too much, for a bit of very basic customer service?
I drove my car to the dealer as I was very close at the time.
And as for spending my 26k on an Audi... no thanks. I'll just spend it with a different BMW dealer next time.

He's got a point, Audi service is pretty flawless. Shame the cars are so boring (bar the R8, naturally). That said I've found BMW to be pretty good, bar a hint of incompetence from the salesperson and a hint of dismissiveness from the service staff. But then I don't want them to massage my ego, just make sure my car works right for a reasonable cost, which they've done flawlessly so far.
The problem with a "sales professional" is that their field is sales, not project managing a repair job. However directing you home was probably a good idea, because assist can hardly get to work on your car at the dealership on a sunday afternoon.

Neither do I, but on the same account I don't want to be dismissed with "I know this will mess up ypur afternoon, but go home and ring BMW customer services".Am I expecting too much here? Maybe it's because this is the first new car I've owned, and have unrealistic expectations?
In response to an earlier poster, what's a MAF fault please?

MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor which basically regulates the the air intake to achieve the best air/fuel mix at any time. I think, stand to be corrected if it does other stuff as well.
Why do people always hunt down the salesman when they get a problem with the car. It's a machiene that's subject to error so it's more of a service thing. I'm happy to put any customer in touch with Mondial if they did come in especially if they're in a mood as it gives you chance to calm them down before they give the poor sod on the phone at mondial a bad day. The number is on your key fob, in your handbook, on the tax disc and if you've got I-drive contactable through there as well. You should be provided with an alternative method of transport if there's the slightest possibility of inconvenience, handing over the keys to your own demo if desparate usually results in a happy customer.
I always advise people to read the car's handbook at their next possible convenience as it saves a lot of worry.
