BMW's "Cheap" in the UK

Similar to my post on the Porsche section, next time youthink you are being "shafted" as far as car prices go in the UK, think again.

In £ this equates to roughly:- (Without Options I believe)

330i - £57,700
530D - £82,000
M5 - £135,000
X5 4.4i - £111,500
750 Li - £137,000

So the UK is dearer than North America, but not near as bad as some other places. Also, the average wage there is a fraction of what it is here in the UK, so the cost of living doesnt make a difference.

Example, you earn £18-20k there PA as a bank manager, and an X5 is over £110k??!!?

This makes me feel better when buying cars here

Gotta be a tax thing surely, what with a 330i costing near double what a 320i does?

Yes they slap a load of tax on in Malaysia, and the residents get shafted big time.

Here is an example of calculation for a Suzuki Swift

Gazetted Price RM31808 (£4,498)

Add Import Tax (30%) RM9542.40
RM41350.4

Add Excise Duty (75%) RM31012.80
RM72363.20

Add Sales Tax (10%) RM7236.32
Total RM79599.52 (£11,258)

Its RM 80,000 nearly. A junior exec would be on around RM 2,000-3,000 a month

Then the dealer slaps on a profit margin, the above price is just what it costs a dealer

Imagine tho, if you were on £18k a year (which is a lot in Malaysia as a non expat), and having to buy a £110,000 X5. Even if you had ZERO living costs (which is not the case with many people), it wouls still be pretty hard

Having lived in both countries, I can say it works out MUCH BETTER in the UK

You must remember, these taxes apply to IMPORTED cars only, BMW build them locally and are cheaper.

Same story in Thailan - 200% tax on vehicles built outside the kingdom.

A nice 3 bed flat on River Vally road (SINGAPORE) will set you back about £650,000.

BMW prices in Singapore similar to those quoted above. Porsche Carrera 4S just around £158,000 over there too

Bottom line is, you wont see anyone with the equivalent job there owning the same type of car.

IE a bank manager here v a bank manager there, a Solicitor here v a solicitor there (on the same level of seniority/experience etc)

Compare the equivalent job abroad and you will find that that person will afford much less

Its worse for us Irish people.

When i was first looking at E46 M3's over here i was looking at an average of about €38,000 (£26k) - €40,000(£28K) for a 2001 with average to low miles. So i decided to look at importing one from the UK and picked a 2001 up with low miles for £15,000!! The only thing is our greedy government also make us pay a registration tax which is 30% of the market value so i on top of the £15,000 i had to pay €9,000 tax. So in total it cost me around €31,000 (£21.5k) so i saved myself around €7,000 but its still alot more expenisve than what you lot pay

Hmm in the Far East it would cost you more, and you would earn MUCH LESS. My friend is a solicitor of around 7 years experience and earning £10k a year there, used M3 £30-£40k

In China imported cars cost up to 5 times what they do in England. I was driven in a Land Rover Discovery 3 out there that cost the rich factory owner £250K. However you still see new 7 series BMW's, S class mercs, Ferrari's and RR's driving around in China. Just shows how much they make from exporting their goods to us, obviously car ownership is just for the few rich still.

No these prices do not apply to imported cars only. This is the price after the discount thing where the cars are assembled locally
