I decided to add the 840Ci Sport to my ever-growing list of potential next car purchases, but all I ever see are autos and I'd prefer a manual. Is there such a thing?

The 850 CSi was a manual gearbox. Not sure if the standard 840/850 were ever offered with a manual option.

do recall some 7 series up to 735 having a no cost manual option , but as stated above 8 series appear auto only

All 850CSi's were 6 speed manuals.
A small number of RHD 850Ci's were also made with 6 speed manual gearboxes but they are rare.
No 840's were made with a manual box.

But ... for about a grand you can change the steptronic auto box to a flappy paddle ... am I right Mr Millar? smile

Only LHD I believe ... actually though, I might be talking out of turn here.

It is the American market that never got a manual 840 ... there were some European manuals ... but they are a very rare thing.

Lots of info on this fantastic site that Mustard pointed me to when I was looking a few months ago:

http://www.e31.net/navmodelle_e.html

However, I saw the light, not to mention the monumental torque, and went for the V12 biggrin

Be good to have another one in West Yorkshire Mitch and I can recommend someone to look after it who knows them inside out and upside down ... although in this instance he may be mistaken as to the availabilty of 840 manuals.

I'm sure he'll be along soon to put me right biggrin

I've seen a couple of RHD 840Ci's advertised with a manual box.

Absolutely right. I was posting after the witching hour and clearly had a mental blank.
The 840's were available in Europe with a 6 speed manual and there are a few RHD models around.
It was the Americans that couldnt be trusted with a stick shift. Quite right too......
The steptronic gearbox can be converted to flappy paddle type doo dahs for around a grand.

If you're seriously interested in an 8 series, Mitch, you know where I am! Come and have a play.

There's no pic on the link either. Please tell me there's something wrong with it ... or it's silver or something hehe

Mind you, I can say with a fair degree of confidence that it'll be considerably slower than mine wink

8 Series in right hand drive AND Manual gearbox format:

830i with 3.0L V8 = 0

840Ci with 4.0L V8 = 54

840Ci with 4.4L V8 = 3

850i with 5.0L V12 = 102 (of which 4 were South Africa)

850Ci with 5.4L V12 = 0

850CSi with 5.6L V12 = 160

No ... Talkwrench is nothing if not a perfectionist ... of which I am sure I will appreciate in the long run. However, right now my normal short reserves of patience have long since been used up and I am now simply in the depths of depression and lathargy... never mind, I have plenty of walls to climb should the urge take me biggrin

No...those are worldwide (i.e total/all markets) RHD figures...but I believe the 3 RHD 4.4L were UK IIRC

Patience, patience Al! It'll be worth it in the end! smile

I did think the initial time estimates were going to be a bit ambitious.

But if it's worth having; it's worth waiting for...and that does take time...and I'm sure it'll end up being worth the wait thumbup
