How does One Check the Provenance of a BMW?

I should know this I know, but how do you check the provenance of a second hand BMW?
ie., how do you check its been serviced correctly etc?

If you have the chassis number, any BMW main dealer can check the history if it was carried out by BMW.

BMW customer services are good too - I've used them to check for full spec, recalls etc.
