local dealer trying to rip me off.... anything i can do ?
Discussion
I recently sent my 98 M3 to my local dealership to have the alarm system re set... it is a standard alarm one grey button one red. ( Thats if you are familiar with bmw alarms..)
The job should take no longer than 20minutes... they are claiming 45min and therefore £96, is there anything i can do to fight this ?

I took my MINI in for some front pads. 3 hours later I get a call... Mr KR?
Yes.
It's **** MINI here, we've checked out your brakes and your going to need front and rear discs as well. They are dangerously low.
Well, as it happens I thought you may say something like that, so I had a trusted mechanic friend have a quick look yesterday. It only needs front pads. The rear discs were actually done by yourselves less than 6,000 miles ago.
- line goes quiet*
Err...
Not really, I'll pick it up after work and take it to another dealer if it's all the same to you... t

So they're not really ripping you off then are they? Did the other dealers do the work? It might have been that once they got in there was more work that needed doing, or that it took longer than expected. Not all workshop jobs take as little time as they should. Also, if you had quotes from other dealers why did you leave the car with a dealer without agreeing a price?

I think you should just pay it, mate, to be honest.
If i had a pound for every time I've drafted a contract which has taken two days, only for a clinet to say "oh my mate down the pub who once had a pint with a solicitor says it should take one day so I'm only paying you for that" then I'd have about sixty quid.

I'd start by reporting them to Trading Standards, then if you haven't paid send them a letter by recorded delivery disputing the invoice.
But the OP didn't agree a price with the dealer in the first place and the bill doesn't seem out of the way, as a previous post stated a lot of places have a minimum billable time. Trading Standards won't get involved in a job like this as it is a simple dispute on the value for money.

Actually, I remember when I had my car MOTed a couple of years ago... The service manager rang up to tell me it was done and asked how I would be paying... "through the nose I expect" I replied.
