Smoking 525d, whats the verdict?
Discussion
Have you tried changing the engine breather valve, or has it had an Inspection service recently?
Does it smoke a lot on full throttle? Does power feel like it could be down?
Have you checked if the EGR valve is gumming up?
This is my 330d at full throttle:

Changing the engine breather cures the smoke... for about 3,000 miles then it starts up again.
It's been this dirty since I've owned it (25,000 miles+ now). Power has always been spot on stock (tested on a RR) and economy is as expected.
I've given up trying to get to the root of it, I just let it be now. They're all dirty buggers, it just seems some are worse than others

I would recommend changing the Engine Breather Valve - will cost you £30 using an OEM part, and will lengthen the life of the turbo. About an hour's labour if you get it done at a specialist/dealer.

It could be clogged injectors (maybe only one and maybe not fully blocked - so rather than a fine mist of fuel its dripping into the cylinder this causes black (unburnt fuel) smoke. You can repair these or if your bothered about wasting probably the whole of a Sat morning trying to do it then just buy a new injector (you will need to find which one it is first though).
However MPG should be slightly worse.
OR rather than stripping it down you can buy fuel additives/fuel injector cleaners just put a bottle into your fuel tank and after a few tanks it should have fixed itself.
