E46 TURBO failure?

Hello,

Got a mate with a 330d touring yr 2000,and he has just clocked 102,000mls and is getting more and more paranoid about the turbo failing.Whats the score re failures,costs and preventative measures etc.At the mo' it runs like a dream.

If the car has been serviced properly throughout its life with the recommended or similar oil then there is no reason to suspect imminent failure of the turbo. They are not prone to turbo failure unless the lubrication is compromised either by quality or neglect.

Mine's on the original turbo at 123k.

It's remapped and I've done track days in it.

True - there are some 330d and 530d's floating about with 200k on the clock on the original turbos.

I would be more worried about the gearbox, a friend of mine just had the auto box self destruct at 99k miles on his 2002 330d.

True - there are some 330d and 530d's floating about with 200k on the clock on the original turbos.

And others which have gone up in flames at 142k despite having FBMWSH, including a new turbo at 100k.

It tends to be the early 150bhp facelift 320d's that have the turbo problems, ie the ones from around 2001-2002. I've got a pre-facelift 2001 320d 136bhp which are less prone to the turbo failure.
