'02 316ti compact problems

I've got a problem with one of my car's, as the title says it's a '02 plate 316ti compact (1.8 engine).
Up until yesterday all was fine, thought we'd give it a bit of a service, changed plugs, oil & filter and the air filter, doing this required me to disconnect the air mass meter.
When i started the car back up the idle was very rough and seemed to be close to cutting out, once the throttle is opened up a bit it's ok again until you let the revs drop.
I tried it with the old plugs and the problem remains.
I've checked over the bit's i've disconnected and all appears ok, anyone got any ideas?
