Hello all,

Hoping you can help.

I'm looking at purchasing a 55 plate Z4 2.0SE to use as my every day car.

I've had opportunity to drive one and thought it was a nicely balanced car albeit the 2.0 felt slightly underpowered for the chassis.

However the main question i need to ask is really to do with the real world mpg that can be expected as i do approx 18 - 20k per year.

I know BMW quote approx 38mpg but they quoted this for my 3 series and i probably get around 5mpg less than that on my usual commute which is a combination of dual carriageway, A roads and urban driving.

Boring question i know but would be interested to hear what your experiences of these cars are?

Cheers

Can't help you with 2.0 but I have the 2.2 and get 27mpg average. Long motorway journeys with some A&B roads usually give 32mpg. Doesnt normally go below 23mpg even after a sustained spanking. Try stretch to at least the 2.2, if not larger, if you can. the 2.0 is 4 cyl whereas the 2.2 has 6 cylinders and with a little help from K&N it sounds pretty tasty.

This is the thing isn't it...the 2.2 does 27mpg average...but so will the 2.5 or 3.0litre ones.... even my Z4M Coupe averages 23-24mpg and I'm not gentle - it'll also do nearly 27mpg on a long run. If you're looking for fuel economy, the 2.0 four pot is the only way - it will probably be well into the 30s mpg wise under normal circumstances. All the other 6-cylinder Z's are comparatively thirsty.

Cheers for the replies.

Yep unfortunately the mpg is the compromise on this occassion so the 2.0 is the only real option.

I was hoping that BMW would ultimately do a 2.0 coupe but no signs yet despite all of the other concepts they are knocking out at the moment.

Anyhow a couple of months time should see me with my fat arse in one trying to keep the thing pointing forward in the snow whilst eagerly anticipating the on set of summer.

hang my 2.5 does 30 - 34 mpg driving normally which tbh you do 95% of the time? I would stretch for a 2.2 just for the 6ss sound i think the car would miss something if it didn't have that purr

4-5mpg less over 20k pa will be a negligible extra outlay, i think you'd be mad to buy the 4cyl on that reason alone

2.0ltr 4 pot is a gutless pile of shite

in a 1 or 3 series I much prefer my 2.0tr 4 pot rattler at least its got some muscle

In a Z4 with an eye to economy you want the 2.5ltr 6, 2.2 is too rev happy and lower geared (I think) so 2.5 wil return better MPG

I have the older 3.0 engine and get about 28mpg on mostly low speed roads and using air con all the time, I enjoy opening it up at any available opportunity to hear that 6 pot growl smile

Doesn't make sense to get the lesser powered variants particulaly as the larger engined models will likely have more desirable options I would have thought. At a motorway cruise i have seen low 30's.

I've had 2, 2.0 Z4's

I travel 30k per anum and get a steady 34mpg average. I do a lot of motorway miles and don't necessarily hang about.

I've not managed to get consistantly over 35.5mpg out of either on a run.

Not sure about the larger engine'd models.

As for it's power.. I must agree it can't pull the skin off custard... HOWEVER that's in comparison to the other cars I've had a TVR Cerbera and a Morgan Aero 8.

As a work car.. the Z4 2.0 is adequate, feels like a much larger car on the motorway (especially if you have the cruise option). You can get a decent amount of stuff in the boot on a tip run, and the cockpit is not so loud it overpowers a hands free kit.

I found the handeling pretty good, so you end up trading grunt for smoothness. You tend to try to carry speed through the bends using the handeling and make the straigtest line possible.

As for the traffic light drag.. don't you'll only embarrass yourself.

I nearly bought a 2.0 z4 roughly 2 years ago, handled well enough but that 4 cyclinder engine let it down for me, all the looks without any performance to match. I suppose it really comes down to what you are going to use the car for.

Thanks for the replies all.

Like cerealsurfer i'm looking for one to use as a daily commuter covering higher than average mileage.
As such it has been a balancing act between fun and finance.

If i was going for pure fun then it would be an elise.

I've also consdidered MX5's and MR2's but as i am 6ft 2 both of these were just slightly to small for consideration for everyday use.

I do trackdays to get my "fix" so i'm not looking for a car that'll rip the knickers off everything at the traffic lights, just something that cruises well with a bit of cornering fun thrown in occassionally.

Cheers

still think the 2.5 se or si would be the best bet, you'll get mid 30's whilst having a much nicer sounding car

And "some performance" forget that 4 cyclinder engine, get yourself into a straight six!!
