Sick 120d

6 months old and trailered to the deal, the error codes are so serious the dealer has to send them to BMW.

The car lost 90% power and I limped it back home ... if I did no better I would say TURBO kaput

Bmw have provided me with a hire skip as a replacement, a Vauxhall Vecthingy ... do they deliberately make it have a eau de chav smell, my daughter asked to be picked up around the corner from school rather than suffer the ignominy

Had an update from the dealer, it is a replacement turbo jobby ...

Its the 2nd turbo replacement of the 2007 120d engines they have seen at the dealers .. this is the new engine which stops the engine at standstill to save fuel.... apparently BMW have an issue !!!

Seems like your 120 is more skip than the vectrathingy.
Bloody new diesels, there is just too much hassle involved imo.
Give me a big, non turbo petrol any time.

I have never liked the idea of stopping the engine everytime you stop. You cut off the cooling oil supply to the turbo and it heat soaks those bearings every time. Merc do it but it is switchable as an option, is it not on your car?

Taking oil pressure away from the turbo all the time does not sound good, surely someone can do a hack to stop it cutting off all the time.

There is a button so you can switch off the stop start system.

I think I would be pressing that button! Especially when the warranty has expired and the £600 (?) per turbo bills were due to come MY way.

The turbo or ATL on the new generation is not a turbine or mechanical failure.The issue is down to DDE application,basically the ATL and DDE arent working well together.This is causing the electronic turbo actuator to freeze or overwork(opens the variable vanes in the turbo).
This problem causes a severe lack of power,christmas tree effect in the instrument cluster,turbo to intercooler pipe to blow off and the particulate filter to clog.Apart from that you wont notice any real difference with performance!
The ATL's were on world wide back order/hold until a cause and rectification was found,but are now on the move again and we havent had an issue since.

Lucky me,tomorrow I start a decoke of an engine(very 70's/80's) on an E65 760i v12 with 12000k miles.Onwards and Upwards

Bit harsh on the Vectra. Being dropped off in a Vectra.. says, well, nothing really. It's just a car. A tool. A to B. Not very good but most people wont notice. Whereas a 1 Series says 'desperate for a badge'

Anyway being more sensible... surely the Vectra is the BMW Assist Enterprise hire car? After 48 hours this gets swapped for a dealer loan car does it not?

Whats wrong with a Vectra? get it with the 1.9 120 or 150 CDTI units and its a fine machine frugal and punchy. Vast boot, great legroom lots of toys and buying 2nd hand you get a pretty much £20k+ car for barely over £5k 2 years later - makes a lot of sense.

Ditto Mondy Ditto Saab 95 etc etc.

Please tell me if you would rather a £10k 116i or a £7k 1.9 CDTI 150 SRI ??? simple choice really.

Do you actually end up in Vectras or Focii/Astras on a regular basis? I do thru' work and get absoloutely sick of them, especially the old Mondy and the Vectra. I'd take a 116i over either because it has a tiny bit of interest attached compared to yet another company hack. I think it's that reason A3s and 1series style cars sell so well. People don't want to shell good money out on something the company throws at them as a "tool".
