What is the difference between the m42 and the m44 engine??

What is the difference between the M42 and the m44 engines? I need to replace the engine my m42 E30 318is and would like the best engine to replace it. Having looked on ebay the more common engine is tyhe m44 but I don't want a major problem fitting a non original engine. If someone knows all the differences that would be very usefull in makeing a decision.

Can feel my ears burning 
I've not got an m44 sorry. Still got the original rattley 150k m42. People have done the swap but its not completly straight forward. I'm sure someone on e30zone will be able to offer some useful advice. IIRC the m44 is torqueier but less rev happy. Not very scientific I know. The inlet manifold are different. I think the m44 is a 1.9. I think there are also differences between an e30 m42 and an e36 one. Not sure what though.
