After swapping the watch strap profile rubber for OEM 45 profile on the front of my 328 I've noticed that the tyres seem to be fouling the arches when full lock is applied in either direction.

First suspicion is sagging springs as I can't find any evidence of them ever being replaced in the cars history, but the ride height looks OK to me. I can fit 3 fingers comfortably between tyre and arch so although I'm still leaning toward knackered springs I'm not convinced.

Any ideas?

What size are the tyres and what size are the rims? Are they the correct BMW offset for a 3 series?

Has it had a replacement rack at any time? What model of 328 did it start out life as? Genuine Sport? SE?

I'm wondering about the lock limiting tabs.....

Is it still on standard BMW suspension?

Yeah, I probably should have been more specific to start with smile

Tyres are 225/45/17
Wheels are 8J17 et35

So they're OK I think.

It's not a sport, just a 328i and yes it's on standard BMW suspension. No replacement rack mentioned in the comprehensive history.

If it wasn't originally a Sport or had big wheels/tyres from factory, you used to be able to buy a kit of 2 steering lock limiters to stop rubbing at full lock

Retrofit kit, steering angle stop

Part number: 32 11 1 140 479

I've seen it happen on 2 328s both on 17" BMW wheels with 235/40s( although different tyre brands ). Strangely it was worse on one car than the other although you'd think the offset on the wheels would be the same. Guess there's always small changes in production tolerances, actual tyre widths ( shape of tyre shoulders )etc..

i read somewhere that the sports don't normally get the rubbing because they came with 17's or something and any car that had the optional 17's shouldn't rub either.

my car has E46 17's and they just touch but i bought the lock stops on the link i posted above which i'm hoping will cure the problem! i had to change my front tyres for the MOT as it had worn away the inner side wall! replace with falken's in the end which have the sidewalls angled slightly inwards.

Yep, Sports or cars optioned on 17s as a facory build usually had the lockstops on the rack already

Do you get rubbing at both full left and right lock? And from a centred steering wheel do you have an equal number of turns left and right?
