Congratulations, so have I, as it happens! I'm collecting my B10 V8S, this Saturday. Which model did you go for?

Good points:
-Uprated engines, suspension, exhaust, gearboxes etc.
-Far classier interior. Ordinary BMWs feel boring and mass-produced in comparison.
-Shocking depreciation in the early years makes them a brilliant buy, especially year 3 or 4 onwards, when they leave the Sytner network.
-Yet to see a poverty spec Alpina. Standard equipment was generous and most were loaded with optional extras.
-Owners swear by the ride and handling of the cars. Perfect blend of sport and comfort, apparently.
-Many were owned by enthusiasts and lovingly maintained.
-Not as common as a BMW, see far fewer on the roads.

Bad Points
-Expensive to insure.
-Expensive to maintain. Uprated Alpina parts are not cheap. Overall running costs fall somewhere between an 540 and M5. The 4.6/4.8 closer to the M5 and the 3.3 closer to the 540.
-Extended BMW warranty not worth the cost, given the recent hikes in premiums of Alpina/M cars.
-Servicing can be an issue. Many BMW dealerships don't see Alpinas too often.
-Those who prefer a visceral, sporting drive should go M3 or M5.
-Harder to sell. The masses don't know the cars and won't pay a premium for them.

Evo magazine some time ago did a buyers guide to the B10 V8's and other than brakes and exhausts there was little to worry about. Top cars and I am 'looking' into buying one in January when my E34 is sold.

The B10 V8S was only produced between '02 and '03. New stuff on the V8S included:

-New crankshaft which increased stroke, displacement to 4.8l and power to 375bhp
-Stiffer suspension
-Alpina-badged Brembo brakes with drilled discs and 4-piston calipers
-Smaller 3-spoke steering wheel
-Smaller, more discreet boot lip spoiler

The brakes, steering wheel and boot lip spoiler swung it for me and I opted for the V8S. However, in terms of performance there isn't much between the cars until you’re deep into license-losing territory. hehe

I’ll post pics when I get my hands on the car. You can find more information and an owners forum at www.thealpinaregister.com .
