I currently considering a Z4 and have in the region of £15K to spend.... Using my limited knowledge of the car, would I be right in assuming a mint 03/04 (private) 3.0 SE would be my best bet?
If so, is the SMG gearbox a no-go or is it worth considering alongside the manual? I remember when I purchased my old M3, I was warned off the SMG.

I have a 2004 3.0i with the SMG and love it. The SMG gets a bad rap. It has the control of a muanuel without a clutch to worry about. It can be put into auto mode if need be. It can be shifted using the stick or the paddles. Sports package is a must IMO. If so, is the SMG gearbox a no-go or is it worth considering alongside the manual? The remap was done at my home address by the tunner i used, there are many people who offer this nowadays but if you get to this position then shop around, i paid £250 to have it done but there are some robbers like DMS who want £750 for the same thing though they will claim it differs.
As for what you get well first don't be fooled into thinking it will make the car any faster, it doesn't, gains through mapping normally aspirated petrol cars are not as big as those for turbo charged/turbo diesels. However there is much to be had by doing it. The car is so much more smooth and consistant right across the rev range, throttle response is noticeably more sharpe and cleaner. The rev limiter is raised by 250rpm and it makes a fabulous noise up there !!, i have also seen an improvement in MPG, if i drive steady on a long run the car will give well into the 30's, when we went to Le Mans this year it returned 29MPG (tank to tank fill up's) and that was driving quite daft much of the time, The 155 limiter is also removed though it won't pull that much more than that anyway. I had the car rolling roaded shortly after and it was giving 251BHP against 231 standard and torque was up by 10lb ft so on paper figures don't look much but it is well worth doing for the overall improvement in driveability,

Not in my Europe; it is not popular. With Z4 3.0, mobile.de, an internet market place for cars, has 959 manual, 284 automatic and 10 semi-automatic gearbox'd cars in Germany on offer.
Autos are best sold with barges or for the disabled; cars driven in a spirited manner are mostly specced with manual gearboxes.
